Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 8
This one-time course is a mini-lesson where students can receive individualized feedback on their writing OR parents can choose a topic below that they'd like to focus on. Upon enrolling, please let me know which number you'd like from these:

1. Grammar Basics: an overview of punctuation and parts of speech, sentence structure do's and don't's, and subject-verb agreement. Practice exercises and activities will reinforce grammar concepts.
2. Writing Effective Paragraphs: understanding the structure and components of a well-developed paragraph, including topic sentences, supporting details, and concluding sentences. Practicing exercises will work on writing coherent and cohesive paragraphs.
3. Essay Writing: an introduction to essay structure (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion), thesis statements, and organizing ideas logically. Developing skills in writing different types of essays, such as persuasive, descriptive, or narrative essays.
4. Creative Fiction or Poetry: learning the basics of storytelling and poetry with a chance to unleash creativity and write a short story.
5. Research Skills: Introducing basic research techniques, including finding reliable sources, note-taking, and citing sources correctly. Emphasizing the importance of proper research in academic writing.
6. Editing and Proofreading: what do we look for when we review our work? Why is revision important? Students learn the importance of editing their work for clarity, coherence, and grammar. Strategies and techniques for effective editing and proofreading are provided.
7. Class Assignments: personalized feedback on a current or upcoming homework assignment (grammar worksheets, research or opinion essays, etc.)

Learners are encouraged to repeat the class if they'd like to work on multiple topics, or they can enroll in my ongoing tutoring class. Students will be encouraged and provided with the tools they need to improve their writing and meet their goals!

I've been a professional writer since 2017 and a writing teacher since 2020. In addition to hundreds of ghost-written articles, I have bylines for magazine articles, blog posts, poetry, and fiction. I graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor's degree in English and have a Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing from Humber College. Currently, I work as a writing teacher for ages 6-65, teaching everything from the basics of reading and writing to SAT prep, college essay review, and reflective writing practices.
