Spark your child’s love for nature in Nature through Picture Books! This engaging class combines science, reading, and art to teach kids about plants, animals, and ecosystems—building observation skills and inspiring real-world exploration.

Mastery Evaluation
Students will be asked to use skills learned in class to observe nature and to share with the class what they observed throughout the week if they wish. They may also draw a picture to share.

Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
In Nature through Picture Books, we’ll explore the wonders of nature by sharing what we see around us, observing seasonal changes, and discovering a new nature topic each week. Through engaging fiction and non-fiction books, art, poetry, and exciting stories, we’ll build curiosity and observation skills. My teaching style is interactive, with lively discussions and open questions where students can share their thoughts and make real-world connections to nature.

Our topics will not be limited to but will include

Week of November 11: Turkeys
Week of November 18: Blueberries
Week of December 2: Migration
Week of December 9: Evergreen Trees
Week of December 16: Hibernation
Learning Goals
Identify Key Plants and Animals – Students will learn to recognize and name specific plants, animals, and insects common to various ecosystems.
Seasonal Changes and Cycles – Students will observe and discuss how nature changes with each season, understanding concepts like migration, hibernation, and plant cycles.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
We will be discussing behaviors of real animals and plants, this will be kept age appropriate but will include some information about what they eat, how they mate, and how they live.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Melissa has been teaching Nature through Picture Books for 2 years. She is an avid hiker, backpacker, and equestrian who lives on a small hobby farm, with animals, plants, orchards and a pond. She is regularly looking for opportunities to learn more about nature, taking classes and reading about her favorite topics. Melissa has homeschooled her children for 26 years, teaching nature, art and picture books almost every day. Melissa also has worked for a charter school for 15 years and has a K-8 Multi-Subject California Teaching Credential.
