Class Experience

What Will Be Taught: Similar to the Nature Meditation for Elementary School Students class, in this class students will be introduced to and get practice participating in a meditation involving visualization.

Topics Covered in Class: We will learn a basic approach to deep breathing, and we will learn how to focus on a scene in nature. We will learn about different details that we can possibly sense in this nature scene. We will also learn that it is okay to have our thoughts wander and to be kind to ourselves if that happens, but to also try our best to focus back to thinking about the scene in nature.

Class Structure: In the first few minutes of class, we will introduce ourselves and discuss the meditation and breathing processes for the day. The meditation will last approximately ten minutes. When the meditation begins, I will place all students on mute and ask students to remain silent and with their eyes closed. I will lead them through meditating on a scripted description of a scene in nature. In the last few minutes of class, students will be taken off mute and can share their thoughts on the meditation process in that session.

Teaching Style: I want students to know that while it may be hard to concentrate or keep their eyes closed for a longer period of time, that they can try their best and that will go a long way. I will encourage them to relax and be kind to themselves. If students need to take a break at any point, they are free to do so, but generally I will keep all students on mute for the meditation-portion of the class out of respect for the group.

Enrollment Note: Siblings, friends, and other groups of learners in the recommended age range are welcome to join the class and use one device, but each learner must be individually enrolled per Outschool's policy on multiple learners: https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/2186663-enrolling-multiple-learners-in-the-same-class

Additionally, if a learner who falls between the ages of 3-18 wishes to enroll in the class but does not fall between the recommended age range of 3-5 (for example, if the learner is 6 years old) it is up to the discretion of the instructor to decide if the learner will be allowed to stay enrolled depending on the ages of the rest of the learners in the section. For example, I have had groups of siblings enroll before where one of the learners was a year above the age range, and they were able to participate well in the class.

While families are welcome to observe their learners taking the class, Outschool requests that parents supervising their children stay off-camera as much as possible. No adult may enroll to take the class themselves. In case you need to be on camera to support your child, please message me so I am aware of the situation before class. Please see the item under the Parents FAQ, “Can adults take your classes?” https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/17205-parent-faq

Outschool welcomes learners of all backgrounds, abilities, etc. Please see our Classroom Content Policy: https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/753895-class-content-policy

I have practiced meditation for 23 years; since I was a kid myself. I have practiced both in group settings and on my own. When I have taught students in afterschool programs, I found that giving students time to meditate for ten minutes before our lessons really helped them to focus and be engaged with their learning. For this reason, I want to introduce students to meditation as a strategy they can use to both allow them to relax and clear their minds to then be able to tackle whatever task they want to accomplish in the day.
