My Place in the World: Waldorf-Inspired Mapmaking and Local Geography

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
In this Waldorf-inspired main lesson block, children will find their place in the larger world by exploring and creating maps and other representations of local geography. In keeping with Waldorf philosophy, we will take a "whole to part" approach, beginning with the entire earth, moving into our neighborhoods and backyards, and ending with mapping out our desks and learning spaces. You will be engaged in creating a miniature landscape that represents the area where you live. This landscape will be your "notebook" for the class, and you will add to it as the class goes along. From this tangible landscape, we will create more abstract maps. Additionally, you will create a main lesson book to document your learning. It will include sketches, drawings, written descriptions of local topography, summaries of work done, and relevant or interesting information about where you live.

Class will be structured in such a way that learners from all over the world can participate.

Supply List
Each week, students will need the following:
*A main lesson book. I personally suggest blank paper in a three-pronged folder or notebook so learners do not feel constrained by the number of pages in the book, but you can also purchase or make a main lesson book or use any sort of blank book. Pages should be blank and without lines.
*Colored pencils, crayons, pencil, and other writing and drawing materials.
* Paints, preferably watercolors, in at least red, blue, and yellow, along with watercolor paper, a painting board, and a paintbrush. A handout on preparing watercolor materials will be provided
* Modeling beeswax, clay, or playdough for modeling

If additional materials are needed, they will be sent out in the weekly email as well as added to the class description.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
