My Own Art Camp: Christmas Themed! (Ages 9-13)

In this multi-day art camp, we will make a different Christmas project each day.

Class Experience

In this Christmas-themed art camp, we will make 3 projects using Sharpies (permanent markers) and washable markers. Each day, students will be guided through making their own art. I will provide examples and offer choices for them to personalize their art rather than all reproducing the examples. I encourage creativity and using their own ideas to alter the art I show them. I have listed the project and supplies for each day below for your convenience. 
 
Day 1: Through the Window (white paper, black paper, regular markers, scissors, pencil, glue)
Day 2: Stained "Glass" on Foil (aluminum foil (taped over a piece of cardboard to use as "paper"), permanent markers)
Day 3: Christmas Starry Night (white paper, regular markers, pencil)

If time permits, we will have "compliment time" where each student can show off his or her work to the class. As a rule, I only allow positive and encouraging comments in class, and I help the students to focus on what they can do rather than comparing with each other. If a student doesn't feel like sharing, they do not have to participate, but I will still ask them a question or two about their art in order to give them positive encouragement.

I cannot wait to see all of the beautiful masterpieces we create together!

Learning Goals

Each learner will need white paper, blue and black construction paper, aluminum foil, a pencil, glue (liquid or stick), scissors, permanent markers ("Sharpies"), and regular washable markers. (Parents, please determine the degree of supervision required for your learners to use these supplies.)

Hello! My name is Tina Kaye Houston. I love helping people learn new things! Locally, I've taught art classes that are based on studying the masterpieces by a variety of artists. I have tutored many students in math over the years, and I especially love Algebra and Trigonometry. I've also taught music and movement classes, and I've coordinated and administered standardized testing. I previously taught English to Chinese students online for nearly three years, and we are in our 22nd year as a homeschool family. Two of our children have graduated, and we still have a few years with our youngest child. I'm a scout leader, and I sing in a band. I spent most of my childhood reading books and learning crafts, so I'm good at making things and I love to read. I am a grammar nerd, too, and I love helping students to use good grammar without feeling overwhelmed by rules.  What I'm the most passionate about, though, encouraging others to do their best. I have so many ideas, and I really look forward to meeting the needs of a variety of students and their families! I can't wait to meet you and explore new things together!

Class Policies:

1) If a class is small or has especially talkative students, we may end a little earlier or later, but I will always try to end on time. 

2) If a scheduled class does not meet the minimum enrollment, I will contact the parent approximately 24 hours before class time to offer to transfer their learner to a new day and time. If requested, I may choose to teach the class at the original time. 

3) Classes will begin on time, even if all learners are not yet present in the classroom. To respect the time of the learners in the class, I will contact absent learners after class to see if they had technical issues or other challenges. 

4) If no learners are present in the classroom, I will wait 10 minutes into the scheduled time before exiting the classroom. 

5) If I am late because of having technical challenges myself, I will offer to stay late or transfer learners to a new session.

6) I expect that learners will treat each other kindly in class and show respect for everyone present. I treat others the way I want to be treated, and I expect the same in return.
