1-2 hours per week. Each day, learners will complete a step to improve their financial lives such as setting up a spending and saving tracker, reflecting on their habits with money, brainstorming income ideas, etc. Instructions and guidance will be provided in each day's lesson. Learners will have the opportunity to interact with each other to share ideas and get feedback. They can also reach out to me anytime! I'll be in contact throughout the class to check in, answer questions and help each learner make an individualized plan for their finances.

Class Experience

The financial independence movement is growing as more and more people realize the importance of living a debt free life. In this winter camp, learners will take action to get started on living a debt-free life! We will specifically discuss how to develop clear, targeted savings goals, how to create new streams of income and low-cost investment strategies. We will also explore the pros and cons of different types of savings and investment vehicles such as savings accounts, money market accounts, CDs, stocks, index funds, cryptocurrency and investment properties.

Our class will take place over winter break with the following schedule:

Day One: Bringing Mindfulness to Our Spending
Day Two: How and Where to Save
Day Three: How Can I Earn Money as a Teen?
Day Four: How to Plan for Major Expenses (Focusing on saving for college, a car, etc.) and FI Success Stories
Day Five: Loans, Mortgages, Credit Cards and more. Learners will also share their completed financial plan.

In each class we will learn about the day's topic and discuss the financial best practices associated with that topic. Learners will then work together with the instructor to create a plan to implement what we have learned. Every task is designed to be relevant and useful in helping learners meet their financial goals. Projects include setting financial goals, creating a spending and saving tracker, conducting research on investment vehicles, taking action to start a business or get a job, etc. Instruction and support will be given in class as well as in optional messaging and discussion with the instructor throughout the week.

Learning Goals

By the end of our course, students will be familiar with the key principles of financial independence. We will make a plan for tracking our income and spending and discuss why it is important to know these numbers. We will discuss the concept of saving more than you spend along with effective ways to invest your income. We will learn strategies for starting your own small business even as a teenager. We will learn about credit cards and how to use them responsibly. Finally, we will go over ways to make mindful decisions about big purchases, including cars and college!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
As with any financial topics, I remind learners that they should gather information about investing from a variety of sources. Caregivers, friends, books, financial advisors, etc. I am not a financial adviser and I do not give specific financial advice to students in class. Instead, I educate learners on investing and money management strategies and provide resources for further consideration. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to chat with caregivers about what they have learned and share and discuss their ideas for saving and budgeting. To aid caregivers with this conversation, all of our notes and resources from the class will be posted in the classroom so that you can check them out with your learner.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

North Carolina Teaching Certificate in Social Studies/History
I am a licensed social studies educator (North Carolina) with a passion for personal finance. Professionally, I am certified to teach both micro and macro economics, and personally I have a strong knowledge in debt reduction strategies, budgeting and saving.

I have taught a variety of social studies courses in both the traditional classroom and online environment for over 13 years. I love making history come to life through first hand accounts, images and stories. While my background is in middle and high school education, I have worked with younger (and older) learners as well. As a homeschooling mom of two (ages 5 and 8) I love the Outschool concept and how it enables teachers to personalize learning for all!

Having fun while we learn is so important! I focus on keeping the classroom environment accepting of all students while delving into these important topics.
