Class Experience

Does your little learner love watching movies? Let's learn a little bit more about what makes them so special!

Over the course of 5 fun-filled weeks, students will explore a variety of movies (some they hopefully have never seen before!) spanning decades and genres. Each week, they will practice new film vocabulary words, learn to communicate their thoughts effectively about movies, and practice identifying what key elements of the movie are. They will learn to summarize the climax and resolution points of storylines, identify a film's genre, understand the motives behind characters, and even imagine what an alternative ending to the movie may look like!

I have been working in the film industry for over 10 years. I love to share little facts about this unique world with learners, and encourage them to learn more about movie making. For each class, I will give the students interesting facts that they can take away from each film. Each week will be a brand new discussion that leaves us all excited for the next week!

This class is mean to be fun, social, and relaxed. Active participation will make for exciting discussions. My goal is for learners to expand their understanding of young films, while practicing effective communication and comprehension. Sometimes the best type of education happens when you don't even realize you're learning!

The five movies we are discussing during our camp (in order) are:
The Land Before Time (1988 Animation)
The Greatest Showman (2017 Musical)
Elephant (2020 Documentary)
The Little Rascals (1994 Comedy)
Peter Pan (2003 Fantasy)

Parents/Guardians are encouraged to watch and review these movies ahead of time. They are listed in advance for a reason. If there are concerns that the movie is not a good fit for your child, please address this with the teacher directly. Thank you!

If your child loves this class, they may enjoy my ongoing "First Film Club" course designed for this same age group. Keep the fun and learning going year round by exploring even more movies! Contact the teacher with any questions.

My Classroom Policies are listed on my teacher profile page. Please message me with any questions or to schedule this class at a different time!
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of how movies are made and what makes them special. They will learn to identify new vocabulary words often used in the film industry. They will use their imagination as film directors to choose one thing they would change about the movie. And they will learn to properly and effectively communicate their thoughts about each film.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
All movies are rated G or PG. I understand that people's viewpoints of movies (and whether or not they are appropriate) may vary, and therefore parents are encouraged to watch the movies ahead of time to ensure they are comfortable with their child watching them. If there are any concerns with the movie choice, please address this prior to signing up for the class with the teacher.
Supply List
Students will be required to watch the movies prior to class. Most of these movies should be available on a number of streaming platforms (such as Netflix). I have included a running list of what movies to expect in the coming weeks in the class information section, which gives families ample time to find and watch each movie.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
