Class Experience

In month-long course, students will meet four times to learn about and discuss famous classic musicals.

The course outline is as follows:

Meeting one: Guys and Dolls
Meeting two: The Pajama Game
Meeting three: My Fair Lady
Meeting four: West Side Story

Students will learn about the plot lines, characters, and composers of these musicals. This class will focus largely on the music of each musical, and we will use class time to listen to and discuss how emotions are portrayed through the songs of each musical. Learners will leave each class with basic knowledge of a new musical, a handout summarizing our class discussion, and a list of additional resources.

This class will be taught using a variety of methods to suit each learner. Students will learn basic information, such as musical terminology and musical plot lines, through class lecture. Learners will listen to different songs together in class and we will use these songs to engage in class discussion. Students are welcome to bring their own favorite musical moments to class to add to the discussion or as a basis for comparative analysis!

No homework will be assigned for this course. Learners will be given a handout summarizing the class content and offering additional resources for students who wish to learn more. Students are encouraged to post questions to the classroom to begin discussion between classes!

One of my first professional jobs in the music world was working as a pit musician with a local musical theater company. This experience created a love for musicals that has never wavered! I love using musicals as a launching off point for social discussions, such as the challenges of being different and how to embrace our true selves. I am excited to share my love of musicals with my learners and look forward to meeting your learning soon!
