Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 1
Beginner - Advanced Level
Dear parents and children,

🥁 🎶Welcome to Music with Ms. Mary-Lou 🎶🥁

↓🍁Please see below for fall 2024 times and themes 🍁↓.

Join our small group class now (3)! Meet fantastic friends, enjoy fall-themed classes and learn while having so much fun!

𝑰𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒇𝒖𝒏 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓-𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆 𝒘𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒅𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔.
The students are encouraged to express themselves in many different ways!
I will focus on traditional and modern children's songs and rhymes, which are accompanied by myself on guitar, mandoline and banjo 🪕🎼 The songs, exercises and activities are based on the pre-k and elementary music curriculum.

The classes are semi-private (max. 4 students), leaving a lot of time for the individual young learners to participate and express themselves!

𝑾𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝒄𝒊𝒓𝒄𝒍𝒆-𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒃𝒚 𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒖𝒑 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒔𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒂𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝒗𝒐𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒔!
The songs will be introduced in an age-appropriate manner, taking gradual steps to learn the song, rhyme or poem. After movin' and goovin' to the weekly-themed songs (seasons, holidays, animals, places, transportation...), we slow down with a listening exercise or game and Show&Tell.

My class sizes are limited to four learners, which is below the outschool recommendation for the age group. Personal interaction with the students and giving them opportunities to speak and express themselves are my uttermost priorities.

𝑴𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒅
I include eurhythmics in the classes, a method that encourages music training through movement. Activities often imitate play and do not have a specific performance-related goal. The students will expand their musical horizon in joyful and interactive ways. We will practice rhymes, poems and fingerplays. I also encourage children to sing or perform solos (vocal, dance or on instruments.)

𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒐𝒓𝒚
The students will explore musical concepts such as tempo, form and dynamics through rhythm games, creative movement, ear-training, stories and improvisation. Children will use their body and percussion instruments to explore rhythm, musical components and expression. We will practice solfege hand signs, learn about instruments, listen to classical music and work with a variety of materials (e.g. scarves). Before every class you will be informed which materials to bring (most of which can be found at home).

I will provide an accompanying print out for every class!

If your child decides to join the course for the semester, I would recommend buying simple percussion instruments such as:
hand drum, tambourine, rhythm sticks, woodblocks, triangle, chimes, bells, xylophone, shakers etc.

𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒔 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍-𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒗𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒋𝒐𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒏 𝒂 𝒅𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒚 𝒐𝒓 𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒌𝒍𝒚 𝒃𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒔. 𝑳𝒆𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈!

*If you decide to drop in for one class only, please make sure to stop the subscription as soon as possible to avoid being charged for the following week*

Song examples are: "There Is a Little Song Singing in My Heart", "I Love the Moon and the Moon Loves Me", "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", "You Are My Sunshine", "Yo Te Darè", "A Ram Sam Sam", "El chocolate", "Butterfly Flutterby".

We will happily practice the "Evergreens" too:
"The Weather Song", "If You Are Happy and You know It", "The Wheels on The Bus","The Itsy Bitsy Spider", "Baby Shark", are part of the repertoire.

Learning Goals
Music and singing aid the children's sensory development and can help to create more pathways between the cells in their brains.

Parental Guidance
This class includes movement. It is recommended that the students participate in an open, uncluttered space free of possible hazards. Sometimes students might be directed to explore the whole room ("walk to all corners of your room.") but are generally advised to carry out movement on and around a mat. A yoga or exercise mat would be great to work on, as well as the children wearing ballet shoes or non-slip socks. Art projects are conducted on the floor, as well, and an exercise mat would protect the underlying floor. No stretching is required ahead of class. Students can bring a bottle of water and should wear comfortable clothes that allow to move and dance. Please acknowledge and fully understand that your child will be engaging in physical activities that may involve some risk of injury. Acknowledge that you have been advised that it is your responsibility to consult with your child’s physician with respect to any past or present injury, illness, health problem or any other condition or medication that may affect your child’s participation. You assume the foregoing risks and accept full personal responsibility for any personal injuries sustained by your child which might incur as a result or participating in this program "Music with Ms. Mary-Lou" and discharge and hold harmless Marie-Luise Weiss, teacher of "Music with Ms. Mary-Lou" from any claim, cause of action or liability for damages arising from any personal injury to your child.

Bachelor's Degree in Foreign Language from University of Graz
I love to sing and play the guitar. I studied classical guitar for almost a decade (Johann-Jospeh-Fux conservatory, Graz, Austria).
One of my favorite activities is to use music and song to encourage my students to express themselves. It's been my experience that music lifts the children's spirits and gets them in the right mood for learning and exploring.
