This twelve week course explores the influences and trends throughout music history, including the structures of musical pieces and listening to individual pieces that are considered hallmarks of classical music.

This twelve week course will be divided into two six-week examinations of both the Baroque and Classical era of music. Students learn about music not just from a point of view of the emotion it causes, but how music fit into the lives of people during these time periods. Music history is a history of people! Our class periods are interactive, discussion and task-based. Homework is where students do the work of listening to assigned classical music (sections of those listed below out of respect for their time, no more than 20 minutes of listening between classes). Parental Guidance
Music history is a history of people. Sometimes people do things that are bizarre, violent, or immoral. An example of a delicate topic that will be hard to gloss over is "castrati" in Baroque opera. I encourage parents to Google this to know what it is beforehand. While it will be mentioned, of course that won't be the focus of the class and I am not endorsing the practice.
Pre-Requisites
Students do not need any prior music knowledge to participate in this class.
