Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner Level
This twelve week course will be divided into two six-week examinations of both the Baroque and Classical era of music. Students learn about music not just from a point of view of the emotion it causes, but how music fit into the lives of people during these time periods. Music history is a history of people!

Our class periods are interactive, discussion and task-based. Homework is where students do the work of listening to assigned classical music (sections of those listed below out of respect for their time, no more than 20 minutes of listening between classes).

Baroque Music and Topics:
Week 1: Baroque melody construction, Bach Cello Suites
Week 2: Baroque opera, Purcell Dido and Aeneas
Week 3: French style, Lully Alceste
Week 4: Oratorio, Bach St. Matthew Passion
Week 5: Handel, Messiah
Week 6: Baroque Concerto, Vivaldi The Four Seasons

Classical Music and Topics:
Week 7: Classical style, Mozart Piano Sonata No. 16
Week 8: Classical Symphony, Haydn "Surprise" Symphony
Week 9: Marianna Martines Overture in C
Week 10: Classical Chamber Music, Haydn "Joke" String Quartet
Week 11: Classical Concerto, Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges Op.VIII No.9 In G
Week 12: Classical Opera, Rossini William Tell

Parental Guidance
Music history is a history of people. Sometimes people do things that are bizarre, violent, or immoral. An example of a delicate topic that will be hard to gloss over is "castrati" in Baroque opera. I encourage parents to Google this to know what it is beforehand. While it will be mentioned, of course that won't be the focus of the class and I am not endorsing the practice.
Pre-Requisites
Students do not need any prior music knowledge to participate in this class.
