Class Experience

The Music Adventure Academy, Jr. is a great place for kids to come and learn new songs in a fun, creative community! If you love to sing and play music in lots of kid-friendly styles, and you're excited to meet other music adventure-loving kids, this is a great place to be. We sing and learn songs every time we meet, and we can also add instruments and actions to the songs. We'll learn the singing line by line, so you can feel comfortable. Even if you don't have any experience singing, you can be successful with this way to learn music. In each class, you can also get better at reading music and understanding music, and we can also sing songs we've already learned. I hope you'll bring your voice and join our adventures!

We will meet two times each week to...
- warm up our voices
- work on some music skills
- learn to sing a song, or keep learning a song we've already started
- sing the song as a group with a great performance track
- work on reading music and understanding music with song-based activities
- connect with others in the group

Song choices will be guided by the interests of the learners, beginning with songs such as the following:
Week 1 (8/16/21): We Know the Way
Week 2 (8/23/21): Don't Worry, Be Happy
Week 3 (8/30/21): My Favorite Things
Week 4 (9/6/21): Count on Me

During the first 40 minutes of each class time, we will learn the lesson material. The last 10 minutes will be open for sharing. During the sharing time, students can share a song they've been working on, or a special interest (like another instrument they are learning, or another creative talent they are developing). Students can also answer ice-breaker-type questions, like "What is your favorite kind of music." This time is designed to help the students feel the friendship and encouragement of others who share their interests.

This class is part of a series built on great kid-friendly songs in different styles. Each lesson includes chances to read music, move to the music, add in instruments you have, and make meaningful connections with others in the class. Reach out to me if you have a special request for connections to make in the music.

About me:
In 29 years of teaching music in private lessons and public elementary schools, the most incredible moments for me have occurred when students enjoyed learning the music and felt positive personal connections. This is what I hope to bring to the many young people learning from home or hoping for more meaningful music experiences. I am positive, upbeat, and relaxed, and invite students to join in as they feel comfortable. If you are looking for a connective, nurturing, musical environment for your child or children, I hope you'll join us!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
No mature content. As an art form, music often arises from sensitive historical or cultural contexts. Any historical/cultural music will be learned in a secular, informative way. Any potentially sensitive music (e.g., from holidays) will be posted for parents and students to see a week before it would be used in class. If any student or parent feels uncomfortable with the selection, that music will not be used. Any student or family sensitivities (i.e. no holidays) will be treated with discretion and absolute respect.
Supply List
Music for most songs will be provided as file downloads. Sheet music could be printed or viewed on a separate device (like an iPad) to help learners who want to use it.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
