Class Experience

Learners feel more confident in their math skills when they have a strong handle on times tables.

Learners will join a weekly 30 minute lesson, to log in and play a fun online game. The game can be played independently, against classmates and even against other students around the world (completely anonymously). Learners are motivated by earning virtual currency, to improve their own speed and accuracy, and by the friendly competition.

The online game automatically adapts to each learner's unique learning needs, helping them recall their times tables at record speed! This means a learner can compete against a classmate where one is learning their 2x table and the other is learning their 7x (or 13x table!).

Learners have access to the game all week, and they can really improve with a little-and-often approach. Even 3-5 minutes a day can have a great impact on their ability to recall their times tables. The data is tracked in the game, and learners are encouraged to look at their own progress.

Common Core Standards:
➕3.OA.7 -Fluently multiply and divide within 100

Why should learners memorize their times tables?
⭐Supports Mental Math: Knowing multiplication facts by heart makes it easier to perform mental math, which is useful in everyday situations and more advanced math problems.
⭐Faster Calculations: When students memorize times tables, they can recall multiplication facts quickly, reducing the time needed to solve math problems.
⭐Reduces Cognitive Load: Having times tables memorized frees up working memory, allowing students to focus on understanding and solving complex problems rather than spending mental energy on basic calculations.
⭐Boosts Mathematical Confidence: Mastery of times tables can increase a student’s confidence in their math abilities, encouraging a more positive attitude toward math as a subject.
⭐Real-Life Applications: Knowing times tables can make everyday tasks easier, such as budgeting, cooking (scaling recipes), shopping (calculating discounts or unit prices), and understanding time (e.g., calculating hours or days).
⭐Improves Memory Skills: Memorizing times tables is an exercise in rote learning, which can enhance overall memory skills

🌈I am passionate about helping teens strengthen core skills to succeed. This can often mean applying the content and skills often covered in lower-grade levels, allowing teens to develop skills and confidence by meeting them where they are.

🌈I focus on building confidence and foundational skills in a nurturing and empowering environment. I help teens master core concepts, overcome academic challenges, and develop a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom.

🌈At the heart of my teaching philosophy lies a belief that all learners can make progress but that all learners are different.

🌈I am a teacher who welcomes all students exactly as they are. I have a lot of experience with neurodivergent children and am a neurodivergent adult myself. Cameras can be turned off if preferred (after a quick hello with the camera as per Outschool policy).

🌈I create quite low-demand classroom experiences. I encourage and welcome participation, but am very quick to adapt to learners who are unable or unwilling to partake in an obvious and active manner. This can mean only using the chat, or even only listening.

👋 Hi there! I'm Ms. Riot, your certified and passionate educator with a flair for innovation and a heart for student growth. Hailing from London, England, I qualified as a teacher in 2007 with my Bachelor of Arts (with Honours) in Primary Education and certified with my Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Here in the UK, I am certified to teach from 5-18 years old.

🌏I have taught around the world, including at a not-for-profit summer camp in New York, volunteering in Kenya and India, and completing a teaching placement in Arizona.

🏫As a classroom teacher, I developed creative classrooms where students felt safe enough to fail. My passion for reading also allowed me to develop a new career as a high school librarian, supporting teens who had not discovered that a library could be a space for them. I have also taught students English up to the age of 16 at a prestigious online school.

🖼️More recently, I have worked within the learning department in a large museum, teaching at a range of online schools and designing curriculum for education resource companies. I also deliver lectures to trainee teachers, supporting them to develop their practice.

🖥️I have been teaching online for a year, for different schools and platforms. I joined Outschool in January 2024, achieving Star Educator by June.
