Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Multiplication is such a fundamental math building block to future topics and being able to recall your multiplication facts will help your learning enormously.
Division requires strong multiplication skills in order to gain fluency. Whether starting out with Division or embedding learning. we work together at the stretch is right for each learners.
Trust me...I'm a Math Teacher and I have seen the impact that strong mental maths has on future grades!

During each Multiplication and Division Booster Class:
   - We will use 30 second quizzes to check for fluent recall of multiplication and division facts.
   - We use a Drill Record Sheet to plot progress.
   - Learners will feedback on what they have been practicing since our last class together.
   - I will agree with a learner what they will practice before the next class.

During these classes I will adapt each class to the needs of the learners present.
We might:
- Break down each times-table and explore ways of making learning a specific times table easier. This might be by
     •	using a method, such as a finger ‘trick’ with the nine times table.
     •	by knowing that the 4’s is double the 2’s and the 8’s is double the 4’s.
     •	exploring axioms such as commutativity which allows a child to rely on the fact that 4 x 3 = 3 x 4.

- Playing online games using a specific set of multiplication facts to encourage repetition and recall (Blooket and Kahoot).

- Look at Fact Families to make a connection between multiplication and division. This helps with the 5’s for instance as we will see that the 5’s is half of the 10’s.Learning a New Times Table
In between lessons is it important to practice a specific times table that your child needs to learn until they have fluent recall of all the associated number facts.

Practice is expected between classes and resources specific to your need will be made available to you.
If you are looking to learn a new times table then I will recommend resources and videos to help you work out the best way for you to learn new multiplication facts.
Three ways you can improve your times tables in between lessons are:
-	FLASH CARDS - I recommend you continue practicing with the flash cards from class until you have memorised ALL of your multiplication number facts and can recall them fluently.
-	ONLINE GAMES - Motivating games will help embed learning with repetition of specific set of multiplication facts.
-	TEST YOURSELF - If you want to check how much you have remembered, then you can always get someone to time you repeating the Drills?
These are all, research proven, effective ways of learning and storing learning in your long-term memory – for any topic or subject.
Learning Goals
Students will be encouraged to learn multiplication facts by practicing specific times tables until they have fluent recall of all the associated number facts.
The times tables a learner practices will depend on their current attainment and what they want to improve on.
