Class Experience

This section of the Movie Bites Learning Club 🎬 is created for older students (ages 13-17) who want to learn more about the wide variety of jobs involved in the filmmaking process.

For movie lovers, there is something absolutely magical about a story being brought to life on screen. Movies transport us to another world. We escape, we laugh, we cry, we think and we learn through movies. 

This section of the Movie Bites Club focuses on unveiling the mysterious jobs (and people) behind all the magic. Students learn how screenwriting, directing, cinematography, lighting, sound, editing, costumes, set design, props and more impact the storytelling elements on screen.  They also learn morea bout film language, filmmaking techniques and film history.

Class Structure:
*Welcome and Introductions
*Short Lesson
*Discussion of topic
*Creative Time
*Sharing (for students who are comfortable)

Note: This class rotates through the below lessons, but each meeting is designed to stand alone and is not dependent on students having participated in a previous segment.  Learners are always welcome to jump in at any time and repeat classes if they want a refresher on a topic.

Week 1: Idea Development  - Titles, Taglines and Short-Descriptions
Week 2-4: Screenwriting - 3-Act Story Structure, Character Bios and Formatting
Week 5-6: Producing - Schedules, Budgets and Hiring a Crew
Week 7-8: Cinematography - Composition, Framing, Storyboards and Overheads
Week 9-11: Lighting - Grips and Gaffers - Utilizing Light to Create a Mood for Your Film
Week 12-13: Directing  - Communicating with Actors | Casting, Auditions, Rehearsals & On-Set
Week 14: Assistant Directing - Calling the Shots
Week 15: Continuity Supervision - Keeping an Eye on the Details
Week 16-17: Costume Design - Character Development through Clothing and Accessories
Week 18-20: Set Design - Creating the Space Your Characters Occupy
Week 21-22: Prop Masters - The Hidden-in-Plain-Sight Magic of Movie Props
Week 23-24: Foley Artists - Making Sound Effects for Movies
Week 25-26: Film Editors - Cutting out the bad bits
Week 27: Film Marketing - Movie Posters
Week 28: Film Distribution - Film Festivals

No experience, equipment or software is required. There will be hands-on elements to some lessons, but supplies will be kept to art and household items that should be easy to find. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Movie Bites Club is a welcoming, diverse and inclusive environment. Big imaginations, high energy, shy learners, and wigglers are always encouraged. Supply List
Note: No video camera or editing equipment is required for this class.  Students will be participating in art/writing activities and games where they will learn about different areas of moviemaking.

Supplies will be kept simple to make it easy for families to have on hand: drawing supplies, paper, pencils, pens, markers, sharpies, common household items, etc.

When applicable, handouts related to the week's lesson will be provided before each class.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
