Students will explore an introduction of fractions. We will use household objects to explore fractions all around us. The following is a general timeline of the first day of class: 1) Introductions 2) Let's see what you already know (formative assessment) 3) Parts of a fraction- interactive note page 4) "I Do"- Teacher will model creating a fraction. 5) "We Do"- Teacher and students will conduct activities to write fractions and discuss their discoveries. 7) "You Do"- Students will come up with their own fraction experiements. 8) Exit survey to assess student's knowledge Second day of class: 1) Reintroductions 2) Share homework 3) Fraction Bingo! Teacher will use real world objects to show fractions, students will mark them on bingo boards 4) Final fractions work
Students will learn the parts of a fraction and what they represent. They will notice fractions with household objects and compare fractions with their peers. Students will learn that fractions are parts of a whole. We will use common denominators to make the activities comparable and simple for new learners.-Ability to print hand outs for two days of class -Pencil -Scissors -Glue stick -12 count muffin pan -Puff balls (or something similar to fill muffin pan cups)
I am offering this class because, through my years of teaching math to students with learning disabilities, I have found fractions are a difficult concept. Students require more than to just look at picutres of colored in pies to understand the concept of "part of a whole". By using a multimodal learning approach, students will better understand how fractions are all around them, thus increasing their number sense and generalization of the concept.
