Montessori Static Addition (Stamp Game) - Montessori Math

In this 2 day course, children will form a concrete and abstract understanding of how to use the stamp game to solve static addition problems. Static addition is what we call addition that does not require any trading or carrying over.

Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Children will form a concrete and abstract understanding of addition. This will be taught through the use of Montessori materials and teaching methods, such as the stamp game. In the first class, we will start with going over all of the features of the stamp game and the teacher will introduce to the students how we use it. From there, we will begin working on static addition equations, which the children will be doing along with the teacher, at home using their real or printable materials that will be sent to you once you sign up. The following class will expand on the first class, while ensuring that any questions that students have, are being answered. Montessori is child-led and extremely adaptable. The teacher will go at a pace that the children are able to follow. For example, if the class is understanding the basics of static addition with the stamp game very quickly, we will move on to more complicated equations. The teacher will move at the pace of the children and adapt each lesson to fit their needs.

As you can see, the classes are only 20 minutes long. This is because we are trying to imitate how the children would be treated in the Montessori environment. The teacher will be introducing the materials to them, then encouraging them to try by themselves, with the teacher still there to help if they need it. The children are then encouraged to continue to practice the materials and what they learned in class, between classes. We will start the second class by going over any difficulties that we had while practicing by ourselves on our own time.

Prior Knowledge: Children should be able to identify all numbers by looking at the symbol (ex. 37) independently, up to 9999. They should also have a concrete understanding of addition and subtraction, with smaller numbers (addition strip board, counters, subtraction strip board, etc).

Please note: All transfers to another time must be done at least 24 hours before. Please ensure that the class time(s) works with your schedule.

Supply List
Children will be required to have the stamp game, either the printable one that I will send you, or even better, the real stamp game! They aren’t very expensive, they tend to be around $30. My favorite Montessori material suppliers are Montessori Outlet (US) and Thinkamajigs (Canada).
