We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada. In the grade 2 Writing Strategies class, students will engage in developing foundational skills that enhance their ability to express themselves effectively through writing. The class aims to prepare students with essential skills in organizing their ideas, writing effective topic sentences, understanding authors' purposes, and crafting opinion pieces with descriptive details. Through structured lessons, interactive activities, and personalized support, students will develop confidence and proficiency in expressing themselves through written communication. Topics covered include: - Organizing Writing: Students will learn how to organize their ideas cohesively, starting from brainstorming and outlining, to structuring their writing with clear beginnings, middles, and endings. - Topic Sentences: They will understand the importance of topic sentences in each paragraph to introduce the main idea and maintain focus throughout their writing. - Author's Purpose: Students will explore different reasons authors write, such as to inform, persuade, or entertain, and learn how to identify and articulate the purpose of various texts they encounter. - Opinion Writing and Descriptive Details: They will practice expressing their opinions persuasively, providing reasons and examples to support their viewpoint. Additionally, students will develop descriptive writing skills by using sensory language, adjectives, and specific details to create detailed narratives. Class structure: Classes will begin with an introduction where we discuss on overview of the writing strategy or concept being taught. I will provide focused instruction on each skill, with a mini-lesson using examples and models to illustrate. Students will be engaged in activities like group discussions, brainstorming sessions, or paired writing exercises to apply new skills. I will assign writing tasks where students practice applying strategies independently, with opportunities for peer review or teacher feedback. We close off the class with a review of key concepts, summarize our learning, and opportunities for reflection. My teaching methods will include demonstrating effective writing strategies through examples and think aloud, encourage peer collaboration and discussion to foster idea generation and sharing, and provide timely and constructive feedback on student writing to guide improvement. My teaching style is interactive and supportive, fostering a positive and creative learning environment where students feel encouraged to express themselves through writing. Students will interact actively with me and their peers through regular class discussions, collaborative activities, and through individual guidance.
