Class Experience

US Grade 7
We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.

In this grade 7 Vocabulary class, students embark on a journey to deepen their understanding and mastery of words, enabling them to communicate more effectively and comprehend texts with greater nuance. The curriculum is structured to cover various aspects of word study, including suffixes, prefixes, words with -able and -ible, homophones, synonyms, and antonyms. Additionally, students explore shades of meaning, analogies, context clues, and reference skills to enhance their vocabulary acquisition and application. Topics covered include:

Word Study:
Students will learn the mechanics of words through word study, focusing on suffixes (e.g., -ly, -tion), prefixes (e.g., re-, pre-), words with -able and -ible (e.g., capable, visible), homophones (e.g., there/their/they're), synonyms (words with similar meanings), and antonyms (words with opposite meanings). They will learn how affixes modify word meanings, recognize homophones to avoid confusion in writing, and expand their vocabulary by understanding shades of meaning between synonyms and antonyms.

Shades of Meaning:
Understanding nuances in word meanings is crucial for effective communication. Students will explore how words can have subtle variations in meaning depending on context or intensity. They will learn to differentiate between words with similar definitions but distinct connotations, such as "angry," "irate," and "furious," and grasp how these shades of meaning impact communication.

Analogies:
Analogies serve as tools for understanding relationships between words. Students will practice recognizing and creating analogies (e.g., cat is to kitten as dog is to puppy), which help them infer meanings of unfamiliar words based on similarities to known concepts. This skill enhances their ability to make connections and deepen their vocabulary comprehension.

Context Clues:
Developing proficiency in using context clues is essential for deciphering unfamiliar words encountered in reading. Students will learn strategies to identify context clues such as definitions, examples, comparisons, and contrasts within sentences or passages. They will practice using surrounding text to infer meanings and expand their vocabulary comprehension independently.

Reference Skills:
Effective use of reference materials empowers students to explore and verify word meanings independently. Students will learn how to navigate dictionaries, thesauruses, and digital tools to look up definitions, find synonyms and antonyms, explore word origins, and verify correct usage. They will develop skills in using context to infer meanings before referring to external sources for clarification.

Class Structure:

The vocabulary class is structured to blend direct instruction with interactive activities and independent practice. Each topic will be introduced with clear learning objectives and explanations, students will engage in guided activities and exercises to reinforce understanding, interactive activities where collaborative tasks, such as group discussions, analogical thinking exercises, and context clue challenges, and independent work where assignments will be provided to encourage students to apply their knowledge in writing and reading tasks.

My teaching approach is interactive and I am aiming to foster a supportive learning environment where students actively engage with the material. I will provide clear examples and demonstrations of word study techniques and skills, provide hands-on activities where I will encourage students to participate in activities that reinforce learning through practice and application, and facilitate discussions that encourage students to share their ideas and interpretations, fostering critical thinking and deeper understanding.

My teaching style combines enthusiasm, encouragement, and structured guidance. I strive to create a dynamic classroom atmosphere where curiosity is nurtured, and students are motivated to explore and expand their vocabulary skills.

Students will have many opportunities to interact with me through regular class interactions and discussions, during class work and exercises, and anytime they need to interact with me.
