US Grade 6
We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada. The grade 6 vocabulary class aims to equip students with the skills to understand and use language effectively, enhancing their ability to comprehend texts and express themselves clearly and confidently. The structured approach and interactive teaching style ensure a comprehensive learning experience tailored to each student's needs. Topics covered include: Word Study: Exploring prefixes, suffixes, synonyms, antonyms, and homophones to understand how words are constructed and related. Idioms and Adages: Learning the meanings of common idiomatic expressions and proverbs to grasp figurative language. Shades of Meaning and Context Clues: Understanding subtle differences in word meanings and using context clues to infer meanings in texts. Analogies: Developing skills in recognizing relationships between words and applying them to new contexts. Reference Skills: Using dictionaries, glossaries, and thesauruses effectively to find meanings, synonyms, and antonyms of words. Class Structure: The class will be structured into interactive sessions that engage students in various activities such as introduction and warm-up, group activities, and independent practice. My teaching method will involve direct instructions where I will provide my students with clear explanations of concepts with examples, use visual-aids like charts, diagrams, and multimedia presentations to illustrate concepts, and hands-on activities like word sorting, analogies, or context clue exercises where students will be encouraged to use their critical thinking skills. My teaching style will be interactive where I will encourage teamwork and peer learning through group activities, promote critical thinking by asking questions that encourage students to explore word meanings and relationships, and offer guidance and constructive feedback to help students improve their vocabulary skills. Students will have many opportunities to interact during class discussions, group work, and any time they have questions during the class.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to identify and understand word relationships such as synonyms, antonyms, and homophones. They will be able to use this knowledge to expand their vocabulary and choose appropriate words for different contexts.
Students will develop the ability to interpret figurative language, including idioms, adages, and expressions with shades of meaning. They will learn how to decipher the figurative meanings of phrases and apply this understanding to their comprehension.

5 Lessons
over 5 WeeksLesson 1:
Word Study (Prefix/Suffix, Synonyms/Antonyms, and Homophones)
Students will study prefixes and suffixes to understand how they modify the meaning of base words. They will explore synonyms (words with similar meanings) and antonyms (words with opposite meanings) to enrich their vocabulary and improve their ability to choose precise words. Additionally, they will learn about homophones—words that sound alike but have different meanings and spellings—which will enhance their spelling accuracy and language comprehension.

Lesson 2:
Identify the meaning of idioms and adages
Students will learn to identify idioms—expressions that cannot be understood literally—and adages—short sayings that express general truths or wisdom. They will explore the figurative meanings of these phrases and how they add depth and richness to language, thereby improving their comprehension of figurative language in reading and writing.

Lesson 3:
Shades of meaning and Context Clues
Students will explore shades of meaning by learning to distinguish between closely related words with subtle differences in meaning. They will also develop skills in using context clues—information in the surrounding text—to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases. This will enhance their reading comprehension and ability to express themselves more precisely in writing.
