US Grade 2
We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada. In the grade 2 Vocabulary class, students will embark on a journey to deepen their understanding and use of language through a variety of engaging activities and lessons. Students will learn essential skills such as identifying and using compound words, understanding homophones, recognizing prefixes and suffixes, distinguishing between synonyms and antonyms, exploring the multiple meanings of words, interpreting idiomatic expressions, using context clues effectively, and developing reference skills to enhance their comprehension and usage of language. Through interactive lessons and activities, they will build a robust vocabulary that supports their reading, writing, and communication skills across various contexts. Topics covered include: - Word Study: They will explore compound words, homophones (words that sound the same but have different meanings), suffixes, prefixes, synonyms (words with similar meanings), and antonyms (words with opposite meanings). This will enable them to recognize and use these word forms effectively in their writing and conversations. - Multiple Meanings and Shades of Meanings: Students will discover how words can have multiple meanings based on context and explore nuances in word definitions, helping them become more precise in their language use. - Idioms: They will uncover the meanings of common idiomatic expressions, learning how figurative language adds depth to communication. - Context Clues: Students will practice using context clues within sentences and passages to infer the meanings of unfamiliar words, developing strategies for independent vocabulary acquisition. - Reference Skills: They will learn how to use various reference materials such as dictionaries, glossaries, and online tools to explore word meanings and expand their vocabulary. Class Structure: Each lesson begins with an introduction to the day’s vocabulary focus, providing context and relevance. This is followed by mini-lessons that engage students in focused instruction on specific word study topics or skills, using examples and interactive activities to reinforce learning. Students then participate in hands-on practice activities such as word games, worksheets, and small group discussions to apply new vocabulary skills. Finally, application tasks are assigned to encourage students to use newly acquired words in writing prompts or discussions. My teaching methods will include modelling strategies for analyzing word parts and determining meanings, encourage peer collaboration and discussion to reinforce learning and explore different interpretations, and engage students in interactive games and activities that make learning vocabulary enjoyable and meaningful. My teaching style emphasizes active participation, inquiry-based learning, and differentiated instruction to meet diverse learning needs. Students will interact with me and their peers extensively through regular class discussions and group activities.
