Our Grade 5 Elementary School Montessori Writing Strategies class, we develop English essay writing skills necessasry for Middle School. Students learn to organize ideas, craft compelling arguments, revise writing for clarity and coherence, and conduct basic research to support their writing. We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada. Topics covered include: - Organizing Writing and Introductions and Conclusions: Students will understand how to structure their writing cohesively, including organizing ideas logically and crafting engaging introductions and conclusions. - Developing and Supporting Arguments: They will learn to formulate persuasive arguments, supporting their claims with evidence, examples, and reasoning. - Editing and Revising: Emphasis will be placed on refining their writing through editing for grammar, punctuation, clarity, and coherence. Students will also learn revision techniques to enhance content and style. - Research Skills: Students will be introduced to basic research methodologies, including gathering information from credible sources, summarizing findings, and integrating research into their writing. - Techniques for organizing ideas effectively, such as outlining and using graphic organizers. - Strategies for crafting compelling introductions and conclusions that summarize key points and leave a lasting impression. - How to structure arguments logically, providing evidence and counterarguments to support their claims. - Methods for editing and revising, including peer review and self-assessment. Introduction to research skills, including conducting searches, evaluating sources, and citing references. Class Structure: The class will be structured around a combination of discussions and hands-on writing activities. Each session will begin with a brief review of previous concepts before introducing new topics. Students will engage in individual and group activities to apply learned strategies, culminating in writing assignments that allow for practice and application of skills. My teaching method will be interactive and encouraging active participation and critical thinking. I will use examples from various genres to illustrate writing concepts and engage students in discussions to deepen their understanding. Emphasis will be placed on providing timely feedback to guide improvement in writing skills. My teaching style will be supportive and collaborative, fostering a positive learning environment where students feel encouraged to explore their ideas and develop their unique writing voice. I will model effective writing techniques and encourage peer collaboration through group activities and peer review sessions. Students will have many opportunities to interact with me through discussions, question and answer sessions, and individualized feedback on their writing assignments. Peer collaboration will also be encouraged to promote learning from each other’s perspectives.

A weekly material list will be provided to you prior to class, in preparation for the following week of classes. Learners are responsible for having the listed materials on hand and printed worksheets ready. If learners are missing a material, alternative suggestions can be provided. Classes will typically require commonly found household items or stationary such as: pencil, eraser, highlighter, scissors, stapler, glue etc.
