Montessori Lilac Series- Sight Words Reading

The aim of introducing students to the Montessori sight words are to support children in developing reading fluency, comprehension, and confidence by teaching them to recognize commonly used words. In Montessori method, sight words are integrated into the curriculum as part of the natural progression of learning to read, focusing on building a solid foundation of literacy skills.

This class will cover the first 50 high frequency words that are commonly used in the English language.

MONTESSORI SIGHT WORDS OBJECTIVES
• Develop Reading Fluency
By recognizing sight words instantly, children can read more smoothly without pausing to decode every word. This helps build fluency, making reading feel more effortless and natural.

• Increase Reading Comprehension
When children no longer need to sound out sight words, they can focus more on understanding the meaning of sentences and texts. This allows them to make sense of what they are reading and develop comprehension skills.

• Build Confidence and Motivation
Mastering sight words helps children feel more confident as they read. The ability to recognize words quickly enables them to read with ease, boosting their motivation and enjoyment of reading.

• Support Phonetic Reading Skills
While Montessori emphasizes phonetic reading skills, sight words provide an opportunity for children to recognize words that do not always follow standard phonetic patterns. This creates a balance between phonetic decoding and whole-word recognition, enhancing their overall reading ability.

• Expand Vocabulary
Learning sight words exposes children to high-frequency words that they will encounter frequently in everyday reading materials. This helps expand their vocabulary and prepares them for more complex texts.

• Facilitate Transition to Reading Full Sentences and Texts
Sight words are introduced to help children read simple sentences and short passages. By becoming familiar with these words, children can more easily transition from reading isolated words to reading full sentences, stories, and eventually more complex texts.

MATERIALS
We will use the "Montessori Moveable Alphabet"/or magnetic board with letters. Physical material is of a great advantage for your learner. However, I also provide the print version.
