Class Experience

US Grade 6
We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.

Grade 6 students will be taught essential reading strategies to deepen their comprehension and critical analysis skills. They will focus on understanding main ideas, author's purpose and tone, theme development, literary devices, analyzing literature and informational texts, comparing texts, and interpreting visual elements in texts. This approach aims to foster a love for reading, enhance critical thinking abilities, and provide grade 6 students with essential skills for academic success and lifelong learning. Topics covered include:

Main Idea, Author's Purpose and Tone, and Theme: Students will learn to identify the central themes and main ideas of texts, analyze how an author's purpose and tone influence the text, and recognize how these elements contribute to the overall meaning and impact of the reading.

Literary Devices: The class will cover various literary devices such as simile, metaphor, symbolism, imagery, foreshadowing, and irony. Students will learn how these devices enhance the meaning of texts and contribute to the author's stylistic choices.

Analyzing Literature and Informational Texts: Students will develop skills to analyze both literary works (fiction, poetry, drama) and informational texts (articles, essays, reports). They will learn to identify structural elements, narrative techniques, and rhetorical strategies used by authors to convey their messages.

Comparing Texts: Students will learn to compare and contrast different texts on similar themes or topics. They will analyze similarities and differences in narrative style, argumentative approach, use of evidence, and effectiveness in achieving the author's purpose.

Visual Elements: Students will explore how visual elements such as illustrations, graphs, charts, and multimedia enhance understanding and interpretation of texts. They will learn to interpret visual information alongside textual content to gain a comprehensive understanding.

Class Structure:

The class will be structured around interactive discussions, reading assignments, analysis activities, and worksheets. Each session will begin with a brief introduction to the topic, followed by guided reading and analysis exercises. Students will engage in group discussions and individual reflection tasks to reinforce their understanding of the topics covered.

My teaching method will involve a combination of direct instruction, guided practice, and collaborative learning activities. I will use a variety of instructional strategies such as think-alouds, modeling, and graphic organizers. Real-world examples and multimedia resources will be integrated to make connections between the curriculum and students' experiences.

My teaching style will be encouraging active participation and critical thinking. I will create a supportive learning environment where students feel empowered to express their ideas, ask questions, and explore diverse perspectives.

Students will have many opportunities to interact with me through discussions, collaborative activities, and feedback sessions. I will provide support to help students develop their analytical skills and deepen their comprehension of texts.
