Money Law 101

In this once a week recurring class we will study the laws governing: Debit Cards, Loan Agreements, Credit Reports, Credit Applications, Debt Collection, Scams, Complaints, and prepaid cards and will repeat the classes every 8 weeks.

Class Experience

The class will cover the following topics on a rotating basis that will repeat every 8 weeks meeting one time a week: 1) Electronic Funds Transfer Act (EFTA)/Regulation E-Debit Cards/ACH; 2) Truth in Lending Act (TILA)/Regulation Z-Loan Disclosures/Loan Agreements; 3) Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA)/Regulation V-Credit Reports; 4) Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA)/Regulation B-Apply For Credit; 5) Fair Debt Collection Practices Act/Regulation F-Debt Collectors; 6) Financial Scams and Fraud Prevention; 7) Complaints and Disputes-CFPB; 8) Prepaid Card Rule-Prepaid Cards.

Every meeting covers a different body of law but stands on its and does NOT require attendance or knowledge of the other subject areas.

In class we will cover the statute or the regulation for that day by first learning where to find it online. We will learn who it applies to, what protections or obligations are identified in it and what recourse is available if it is violated. We may watch short videos, or I will lead a discussion to get students this information. 

In class we will encounter a consumer with a problem that students will solve using that day's law either in a breakout group or on their own.  Finally, we will come back together and discuss our solutions.
