Do you love the song "How Far I'll Go" from Moana? I do too! We are going to learn how to play the chorus on ear by piano (no reading skills required!) Learning to play by ear is an important skill for musicians, and we'll have fun and learn some key piano fundamentals along the way!

Students of all experience levels are welcome, from those who have never played a note on the piano to those who have received years of lessons! I will conduct an informal assessment the first week so that I can adjust instruction to your individual needs, strengths, and interests.

Lesson 1: Moana Introduction: Students will learn to jam to the chorus of How Far I'll Go using chord roots or power chords in the left hand. Students will be able to play along with the recording.

Lesson 2: Moana Melody: Students will learn to play the melody for the chorus of How Far I'll Go. Students will be able to play along with the recording.

Lesson 3: Combining Hands: Students will learn to combine their hands. By the end of this lesson, they should be able to play the chorus of How Far I'll Go with both hands. Students will be able to play along with the recording and independently.

Lesson 4: Moana-Advanced: Depending on the needs and interests of students, they will be able to level-up their playing in one or more of the following ways: playing more advanced left-hand patterns, improvising (playing creatively with the melody), or learning the verse.

I believe that students learn best by doing. While I model all of the skills taught in class, the majority of class will be spent with the students experimenting in a safe environment and receiving instant feedback. Because this is a group class, there will be a balance of instruction, independent practice time, and sharing with the group to receive feedback.

I hope you will enjoy playing Moana's How Far I'll Go as much as I have! I can't wait to see you in the course.

I'm a certified music teacher with over a decade of experience teaching music in the public schools. My Bachelor's Degree (from SUNY Fredonia) is in music education, and my Master's Degree (from Loyola University Maryland) specializes in Kodály Music Education.

My mom was a piano teacher and my dad was a public school music teacher, so in one sense you could say I've always grown up around music and the piano. I had traditional piano lessons growing up and in college. However, around Middle School I discovered that my real love for piano is Boogie Woogie music, the blues, and improvisation. I would have given anything at the time for improvisation instruction; that's one of the reasons why I'm so passionate about passing on my love of piano improvisation with young students today!
