Class Experience

Does your child love to listen to stories? Does your child love to draw and create art? If you answered yes to these questions, my class is the one for your child! I have been teaching for over 20 years and most of my career has been spent in Elementary education. I also have my early childhood endorsement and art endorsement so I am very excited to be able to teach a class not only including reading, but art also! I will be reading a short picture book and then as a class, we will do a take away craft or drawing involving one of the characters, an event, or a lesson of the story. I keep my classes small so that I am able to give attention to all learners and have discussions throughout the class. The book we will be reading together is the book 'Miss Moo Goes to the Zoo' by Kelly Graves. We will then be drawing our own zoo animal.
Learning Goals
During the reading of 'Miss Moo Goes to the Zoo' by Kelly Graves, we will talk about the characters, make connections, understand the sequence of events, and use context clues to help us understand words that are unfamiliar. Reading to them will also help them develop and increase their language and listening skills. The stories I will read are children’s favorites and I promise you it will be not only be educational, but a great time for your child as well. I hope to instill the love of reading in children, expand their imagination, and increase their understanding of the world around them!

Arizona Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hi! My name is Jana Beckstead and I have been teaching for 21 years. I started my career teaching 3rd grade for 2 years and then moved on to teach 2nd grade for 5 years. Following that, I taught Kindergarten (5 years), 4th grade (5 years), and Kindergarten through 6th grade art (3 years). During the height of the pandemic, I taught Kindergarten through 6th grade virtually. This year I am teaching 7th and 8th grade reading and writing in middle school. I also have 5 children of my own and 2 grandchildren. My husband is in the military and we also have 4 sweet dogs and a bearded dragon named Mona.

I graduated from Arizona State University with my Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies. I worked for a newspaper at that time in advertising. When my children started school, I myself went back to school and received my Post Bachelor Certification in k-8 education. I also received my Early Elementary endorsement, Structured English Immersion Endorsement, and Art Endorsement. Along with my certification, I have attended hundreds of hours of professional development in the school district that I teach in. I absolutely love teaching; it is my passion. I can't wait to share my knowledge and creative abilities with your children through the love of reading and art.
