Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Participants can expect to be taken on a fun and interactive journey through the stories of the Kings of Athens up till the birth and youth of Theseus. We will delve into the mythology that gave Athens its name as well as the mythical heroes who built it. Images and some video will be shared to help bring the story to life and as the storyteller, my goal will be to use my theatrical and voice-artist background to make the tale memorable. Throughout, students will be encouraged to ask questions and will also be posed questions to test their listening and comprehension skills. Class sizes are kept small to ensure students are given ample opportunity to interact with the teacher and are encouraged to keep microphones on (if surroundings are quiet) so they may freely communicate. Specifically, we will learn about Theseus' ancestry back to Cecrops I, the wanderings of Theseus' earthly father Aegeus, the Panathenian Games, the murder of Minos' son Androgeus, Minos laying siege to Athens, the flight of Daedalus from Athens to Crete, and finally; Theseus discovering he is heir to the throne of Athens.

Learning Goals

Students will learn about the lineage of Athenian Kings up to Theseus, Hercules, Pylas, Minos, Aegeus, Aethra, and Medea. All information is primarily sourced from Pseudo-Apollodorus' Bibliotheca. Students will be encouraged to speak, ask questions, and be questioned themselves with a focus on comprehension skills and critical thinking.
