Mini Book Club: Reading Comprehension~the Runaway Pumpkin
In this one time class, we will get comfortable and listen to a Halloween story, called The Runaway Pumpkin and develop reading comprehension skills and make strong predictions as well as create text to self connections.

Happy Halloween! In this one time class, the students will be encouraged to grab a snack~maybe a fall apple, or a bite size Halloween candy bar~and a comfy place to listen to a fiction Halloween story. We will read a story and have a book talk~focusing on the author and illustrator, characters, setting of the story, the problem in the story. During the reading, the students will be encouraged to predict what will come next in the story. They will make text to self connections. We will read The Runaway Pumpkin by Kevin Lewis. Illustrated by S.D. Schindler.

~The students will use listening skills to actively listen to a fiction story.
~The students will use social skills to discuss the story with friends and make text to self connections.
~The students will actively listen to a story read with fluency and expression.

Hi! Welcome to my Outschool classroom.
My name is Betty Nilssen. 💕
I have a BS in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish from UW-Milwaukee. I am a first grade teacher, but I have also taught second, third and fourth grade, full inclusive classrooms. My passion for teaching reading while incorporating phonics, phonemic awareness, rhyming, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, science, social studies, math, drawing and writing helps children strengthen their academic skills while they gain academic confidence and a love of learning. Teaching reading is my super power.
However, I always incorporate math, writing, drawing, social studies and science into all of my lessons, as well.
I have three adult daughters and two of them are teachers. My mom was also an educator.
There are so many books to read, words and sentences to write, math equations to solve and fiction and non fiction pictures to draw. Let's get started!
