Welcome Outschool families! In this class, students will learn how to make a 3-dimensional Alex character and two block cubes out of folded paper. I will open the class session with individual introductions and go over class rules. Then I will spend a few minutes giving learners a brief history about the art of Paper Crafting and helpful techniques for folding paper tabs and making creases. Learners need to come to class with their color printed images from the zip file provided by the teacher. Learners also need to cut out and label each of the pieces prior to class. Learners will listen to the teacher and follow step by step instructions for folding paper tabs, making creases, and gluing sections together to form a Minecraft block cube. Next they will make a second Minecraft block using the instructions they have just learned. After two blocks are completed, learners will follow step by step instructions to fold and glue each body part to make a 3-dimensional Alex character. After completing the project, learners will engage in a fun discussion about their favorite creature, update, and why they love the Minecraft game. I have some Minecraft related questions planned to spark an interesting conversation between learners and the teacher! Paper crafting is a fun and economical way to develop important fine motor skills and creativity. No prior experience is needed. I look forward to meeting your crafter in my classroom!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I am Julie Johnson and I love teaching children of all ages! I enjoy incorporating arts and crafts, games, and hands-on activities in my Language Arts, Natural Science, and Craft classes. I like introducing fun props and teaching aids to enhance learning and prompt class discussion. By integrating science, literature, and art, students combine critical thinking skills with creativity. I think children learn best when teachers foster a creative environment while engaging in new material.
I am a mother of three home school graduates. I have over 20 years of teaching experience from Preschool to High School, including 3 years of online teaching. My diverse experience includes: ESL Online tutor, Preschool teacher, Sunday School and VBS coordinator, Driver’s Education instructor, English Grammar and Greek teacher, Biology Dissection and Botany teacher, Logic, World History and Literature teacher, and Fiber Art Co-op teacher. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Literature from Northwest University and TESOL certification. I am also a certified Project Learning Tree Pre-K-8th grade educator and enjoy incorporating environmental literacy in my courses.
A favorite quote of mine by Plutarch is, “ The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled.” I strive to ignite creativity in my learners while building confidence and good comprehension skills of the subject they are learning. When I am not teaching, you will find me on a hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains with my family, in my garden, reading, or learning a new craft! Thank you and I look forward to meeting your child in my classroom soon!
