Calling all Minecraft Marathoners! Do you want to spend a half day in camp with us, making friends, learning real-life engineering skills and experiencing the unique create mod? If so then this is the class for you! Note: It is imperative that learners are signed up for this class with enough time to install all of the requirements and depending on your computers capabilities, leave time for potential troubleshooting. Please begin to follow the step by step instructions, without skipping any steps, as soon as you sign up in order to make sure this program will work with your computer. Contact the teacher well in advance of class if you need to troubleshoot. This class will run as a day camp on Mondays (Pacific) although it may be Tuesday for you depending on your timezone. This class is a one day, 5 hour marathon camp, with a one hour break in the middle. Teacher Tom, your Outschool Rocket Science teacher, was featured as a top educator on Outschool's EPIC Spotlight for Passion-Driven Learning in 2021 and is here with an exciting multi-session day camp! In this class, we will build on our private Minecraft server using the unique Create mod to learn together about rotational energy using cogs (gears), belts, waterwheels, windmills, and fans, eventually upgrading to steam engines, trains, and automatic mining drills. (YOU WILL NEED MINECRAFT JAVA & THE CREATE MOD INSTALLED AND RUNNING TO PARTICIPATE) Learners are required to come to class prepare, having followed the detailed instruction sheet and properly installed the mods, so that they do not diminish their class experience or that of their classmates. Learners should not expect help with installation during class time and the teacher will only do so on a case by case basis so as to not take away time from the learners who come prepared. This camp will be running in a different, faster way from my ongoing Minecraft classes, and we will be working on specific projects with materials provided rather than gathered by the class. Gamertags will be privately shared with the teacher to enable access to the server. As required by Outschool, the server will not be accessible outside of class. Class 1/During the first 2.5 hours: We will be learning the basics of rotational energy using waterwheels, automatic farming, and advancing technology. We will then advance to wind power, and begin building contraptions to gather resources more quickly & process them into more useful things. Class 2/During the last 2.5 hours: We will build a Steam Engine & start utilizing the steam power to truly power our automation & create the needed materials to build trains. We will plan routes for railways, and design & build trains to use on them. The Monday Morning Class runs from 7:00am-9:30am pacific, with a one hour break from 9:30am-10:30am pacific, and then learners return from 10:30am-1:00pm pacific. The time you are seeing when you sign up will be accurate to your own timezone. The Monday Afternoon class runs from 2:00pm-4:30pm pacific, with a one hour break from 4:30pm-5:30pm pacfic, and then learners return from 5:30-8:00pm pacific. As this is a long half-day camp, it is suggested that learners do something active before class and on their break to help wake up their brains. Snacks and drinks are permitted during class, and learners can stretch or leave to use the washroom at anypoint. Instructions & files for installing the Create Mod are under "Learner Supplies" & in the classroom when you sign up. It is imperative that learners follow the specific instruction sheet provided and have all the required mods successful installed prior to class so as to not interrupt the class with troubleshooting. Contact Teacher Tom in advance of class if you run into any issues. Learners should be able to read independently. I teach several Space, Science, History, Trades & Technology classes including; An ongoing weekly version of this Minecraft Engineering class! Women in Space (Historic & Modern) Analog Astronauts & Missions, Current Events in Space Technology & Rocket Launches, Billionaires in Space, Rockets in Space, Kerbal Space Program, Ham Radio, The Science of Fireworks, Historic Antarctic Expeditions, Lego Challenges, Tools, Finish Carpentry & more!
Learning Goals
Students will make friends & gain familiarity with using rotational energy through the new devices in the mod, and gain a better understanding of how these technologies work in the real world.
