Class Experience

Minecraft: Education Edition offers an engaging platform for computer science education. This curriculum is based on Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) standards and helps students learn basic programming concepts and build computational thinking skills. This course combines a variety of computer programming skills in a structured, linear approach to build a city with road networks, buildings, parks, zoos, mines and more in their Minecraft world—all through coding.

DAY 1
The Agency : Introduces students to coding, provides an overview of Minecraft: Education Edition and the Microsoft MakeCode coding editor. Students learn to use on chat and other commands to code their Agent to do different actions in the game. Code some simple programs.

DAY 2
City Planner : Students explore new coding types and how coding can assist students when building in Minecraft. Students design and code a road network.

DAY 3
Building Structures : Populating the city houses, offices, skyscrapers, landmarks in their Minecraft city using the PLAYER, AGENT, and BLOCKS coding features.

DAY 4
Zoo : Student explore how code can be used to facilitate the imagination. Students will code more creatively with increasingly complex code, while using the BUILDER blocks.

DAY 5
Food Sources : In this unit, students will expand on their code fluency as they code the food sources for the city. Students will explore how code can be used to create farming automation.
Energy Sources - In this unit, students will code a wind farm, introducing animated turbines and an electrical resource to power a city. Students will explore how code can be used to create animation, leading to new ideas, and the visual expression of those ideas.

DAY 6
Parks & Recreation : Students expand their knowledge of MakeCode as they code their Agent to build parks. Students will use loops to code a fence border and water feature more efficiently, then use math as a part of coding to randomly plant flowers throughout the park and beautify the city with foliage.
