Class experience
As the newly-elected mayor of a brand-new Minecraft City, students have their work cut out for them! In this problem-solving and social studies class based loosely on "Sim City," students not only build their city but govern it. During each class, as they work to construct the perfect metropolis, our student mayors receive individually-crafted "telegrams" from a fictitious "cabinet" of advisers. While each mayor's "Construction Adviser" alerts them to engineering and design issues in their...

Students will need to download Minetest, the free public domain version of Minecraft. This is a no-cost program that is easy to learn and modify and has worked really great for our online classes. We do provide technical support for successfully downloading the program. Students will also need to use Google Sheets, although they don't necessarily need a Google account to do this. Please note, Minetest/Minecraft does not run well on a tablet or Chromebook so your child will probably need a laptop/desktop computer for the class. Students who have never played Minecraft/Minetest are more than welcome. We have a short tutorial that should get them up to speed in no time. The game is very user-friendly and intuitive.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Please note that while this class does sometimes relate to political issues, we always take an "NPR" type approach to each issue and never infuse our lessons with our own political opinions. All questions are presented in a "some people feel this and other people feel that" type of teaching philosophy. Our goal is to get students excited about thinking about these subjects for themselves and to make up their own minds, not to push any particular political philosophy.
