Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
*** All my classes are available in Spanish upon request ***

Mindful Astronomy is an approach to astronomy that includes as many senses as possible in the process of learning. In this particular Mindful Astronomy class we will create a personalized model of the Earth-Moon System. Because students are creating their own scale model, they are being introduced to mathematical concepts in a hands-on way.

The entire class is based on experience and discussions. We will start by discussing about how far everyone thinks the moon is. We will then create a scale model using our hands as the scaled size, this makes our model unique to everyone. The students will make their hypothesis based in the information they have. Once the model is ready, we will then find out the real distance in our model and see if our hypothesis was correct or not.

I will not be sharing my screen or using a power point. Each student should bring a non stretchable rope of at least 10 feet long (3 meters long). No previous knowledge of astronomy is required. Every Lerner is welcome in this class because they will all benefit from it. Blind kids are particularly encourage to participate since this class does not use any visuals and a lot of tangible experiences.

Note: In the class we will take the rope around our fist and tide a knot. We will do the same around our thumb, if you believe your learner needs support to tide the knot, please make sure to provide that, so that they can fully participate on this experience.
