Middle School Poetry Slam: Signs of Summer

Class
In this six week writer’s workshop, learners will meet twice a week to write, read, and share poetry or song lyrics. Each week will feature a theme and model poem. This is a safe space for poets, song writers, or fans of spoken word.

Lesson 12
Middle School Poetry Slam
Middle School Poetry Slam-Choose one poem to share during the Poetry Slam. You may choose a poem written by another poet (on the public domain) or share an original piece. Your poem should follow the theme, “Signs of Summer”.
  • Learners will write, revise, and edit original poetry that incorporates word choice, imagery, and literary devices.
  • Learners will analyze the themes of various poems.
I am a published poet and I believe in the power poetry and lyrics. I love to share my love of poetry with young poets and I feel it is important to provide a safe space for young poets to share.

Details: I will provide written and verbal feedback on the learner's poetry at their request.
Poetry has tremendous appeal for diverse learning needs, especially ASD. Poetry is sensory-rich, patterned language and many learners with unique needs are characterized by sensory-rich, patterned thought.

Learners should review the Model Poems prior to class. They may use the lesson prompt or "theme" for inspiration when searching for others poems in the public domain or writing their poetry.
