This is an introductory science course and is the basis for further study of physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, and other sciences. This flex course involves the investigation of the structure and properties of matter, and the interrelationship of matter and energy in the physical world. Mathematical skills through pre-algebra are used in problem solving. Moderate workload can be expected through projects/assignments. The class will cover the following topics: What is matter, How are atoms and molecules related, How does particles behave in the states of matter, chemical and physical changes, elements, compounds, and mixtures, energy, temperature, and heat. Lessons will include a warm up, direct instruction (video), individual/group, class discussion, and exit ticket. Classes will be conducted via the outschool online platform. I will be availabe by email and messaging through outschool. Students will communicate with each other through the outschool platform only. This is a middle school science course. Week 1 What is matter? Lecture Worksheet Exit Ticket Week 2 How are atoms and molecules related? Lecture Worksheet Exit Ticket Week 3 Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures Lecture Worksheet Exit Ticket Week 4 How does particles behaves in states of matter? Part I Lecture Worksheet Exit Ticket Week 5 How does particles behaves in states of matter? Part II Lecture Worksheet Exit Week 6 Chemical and Physical Changes Lecture Worksheet Exit Ticket Week 7 Energy exists in different forms Lecture Worksheet Exit Ticket Week 8 Energy can change forms but it is never lost Lecture Worksheet Exit Ticket Week 9 Technology improves the ways people use energy Lecture Worksheet Exit Ticket Week 10 Temperature depends on particle movement Lecture Worksheet Exit Ticket Week 11 Energy flows from warmer to cooler objects Lecture Worksheet Exit Ticket Week 12 The transfer of energy as heat can be controlled Lecture Worksheet Exit Ticket Students will have an digital interactive notebook.
Learning Goals
By the end of this course, the successful student will learn:
1. Everything that has mass and takes up space is matter.
2. Matter has properties that can be changed by physical and chemical processes.
3. Energy has different forms, but it is always conserved
4. Heat is a flow of energy due to temperature differences.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a currently a certified 7-12 science teacher that teaches physical science. I have also taught the following courses: Biology, AP Biology, Oil and Gas Production, and T-2 Safety Systems. Personally I feel that that I bring these topics to life with hands on acitivites and technology. I believe that is more than one way that a child can show me they understand the content. I allow them to have a choice and create a product to show me they understand.
