Class Experience

We will cover the first half of "Oxford Latin Course, Part I," which introduces students to the fundamentals of understanding Latin grammar and translation and Roman history, mythology, and culture. Students will follow the exercises and readings in the text with assigned homework, as well as in-class drills and sight reading that will enhance skills and mastery of forms. History, mythology, and cultural lessons will be taught alongside the Latin lessons. This course is an accelerated version of my "Middle School Latin: Oxford Latin, Book I." In order for students to effectively develop these skills and set a firm foundation of learning Latin, this class must meet five times/week. Since the sessions are ninety minutes, each one will have a ten minute break. We will follow the concepts and lessons in the sixteen chapters of the text.

The course schedule is as follows:
- Week I:
   - Introduction to the course and Chapter I - "Scintilla and Horatia at Home," The Nominative Case (subject) and Verb Agreement
- Week II:
   - Chapter II - "Argus Steals the Dinner," The Accusative Case (direct object); Quiz I
- Week III:
   - Chapter III - "Quintus Helps His Father," Nouns and Adjectives of the 1st and 2nd Declension; Conjugations of Thematic Latin Verbs; Quiz II
- Week IV:
   - Chapter IV - "At the Fountain," Person and Number of Verbs; Declining Nominative and Accusative Cases
- Week V:
   - Chapter V - "Market Day," Person, Number, and Tense of Verbs; Exam I
- Week VI:
   - Chapter VI - "The School of Flavius," Infinitives, Verbs of the 3rd -io, the Vocative, and Forming a Question in Latin and Exam I
- Week VII:
   - Chapter VII - "Flavius' Story: The Siege of Troy," Nouns and Adjectives of the 3rd Declension, Athematic Verbs; Quiz III
- Week VIII:
   - Chapter VIII - "The Death of Hector," The Imperative Mood, Prepositions, and Compound Verbs; Exam II

In each session, I will introduce and demonstrate the chapter's concept, allow for questions and practice, and review homework from the previous lesson.
To assess student progress and mastery, I will quiz students every week, with the exception of three of the weeks where students will have a comprehensive, unit exam. Quizzes will be in class and assessed within one week; exams will be "take home," open book/note and assessed within two weeks.
I run a very active classroom where I expect students to lead the discussion by asking questions and practicing with me and one another. I will always be open for questions and feedback during the sessions either through the chat or by the student simply raising their hand. Learners will have immediate access to me during the entire session and with other students during practice.
Students do not need any previous knowledge of Latin or Ancient Rome. This is a beginning course designed to introduce students to the basics of Latin while increasing their English vocabulary and logic skills.

***DISCLAIMER*** Students who chose not to complete the homework and not participate during class practice will have a difficult time grasping the material and passing the course.

Learning Goals

Students will complete and master the concepts from the Oxford Latin I text. They will understand the basics of Latin grammar and learn the foundation of translating a Latin text, alongside the history, culture, and mythology of Ancient Rome.

Parental Guidance
Ancient Rome was a culture of violence; however, the Oxford text does an excellent job of presenting Roman culture at an age-appropriate level, and I do not greatly expand on topics that pertain to excessive violence, murder, or suicide. These topics are handled with utmost care and are presented so that they are not all graphic in nature.
