The class will be very hands-on with diagrams to recreate, fictional forensics stories to make up for the group, and labs to try at home. Class Experience
Forensic Science is the study of the application of science to the law. This integrated science course is designed to explore the scientific and technological aspects of criminal investigations. Topics will include the study of DNA, glass, blood, fingerprinting, chemical residues, and evidence collection as it relates to forensic issues. This course is a miniature version of some of the topics that will be discussed in high school forensics. The goal of this course is to engage interested students into the field of forensics. Week 1: •Intro to Forensics •Observation Skills •Deductive Reasoning •Eyewitness Testimony •The Innocence Project Week 2: •Investigative Processes Week 3: •Types of Evidence Week 4: •Searching the Crime Scene •Evidence Collection & Chain of Custody Week 5: •From Crime Scene to Court Room Week 6-7: •Items of Interest (Evidence) •Fingerprints •Hair •Fibers Week 8-9: •Blood Typing •Handwriting •Chromatography •Arson This course will last 9 weeks using the flex format. Flex means the student work will be on the class wall, so the group will not meet for live classes. The work will be uploaded to the class wall on Sunday night at 11pm EST. Each week the student will log in on Monday to begin the class, and the goal is to finish the weekly assignments by Friday night. Student Interaction: Students will interact by uploading an image or video of work samples. In addition, students will engage in group discussions on the class wall.

Performance standards-
SFS1 Recognize and classify various types of evidence in relation to the definition and scope of Forensic Science.
SFS2 Use various scientific techniques to analyze physical and trace evidence.
SFS3 Analyze the use of toxicology, serology and DNA technology in forensic investigations.
SFS4 Evaluate the role of ballistics, tool marks and evidence of arson in forensic investigation.
SFS5 Evaluate the role of Forensics as it pertains investigations.
Main goal-
To allow interested middle school students the chance to sample a mini forensics course.

Parental Guidance
Communication-Parent teacher communication is key in a virtual class setting. Please make sure you are able to receive and respond to messages on the Outschool platform via your parent inbox.
Important Practice-All students will be provided key practice the week before class begins. The parent will need to help the student on these. The practice will help the parent and teacher confirm the student knows how to upload assignments, how to use the inbox to ask for help, and how to setup their science template.
Supply List-Please look over the list, and do not use any items your child is allergic to.
Third Party Tools-We will use Youtube and Flipgrid. An account is not needed to use the service for practice.
