Middle School Expressions and Equations
This class will cover 6th - 7th grade common core standards under the "Expressions and Equations" domain. We will explore equivalent expressions, solving multi-step equations, and writing and solving inequalities.
What's included
8 live meetings
6 in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. Students will have access to 5-10 practice problems per class to help them reinforce what they learned in class.Class Experience
US Grade 6 - 7
Beginner - Intermediate Level
This course will go through the basics of expressions, equations, and algebraic thinking for middle school students. I will go through 6th and 7th grade math standards so this class is ideal for 7th or 8th graders who are behind in math, or 6th graders who are looking for some enrichment. This class covers common core standards for 6th and 7th grade, only standards under the domain "Expressions and Equations."
Learning Goals
Students will be able to simplify expressions with variables and identify equivalent expressions.
Students will be able to solve one, two, and multi-step equations involving variables.

Aligned with Common Core State Standards (CCSS)8 Lessons
over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
Order of Operations and Substitution
Students will be able to solve 3 to 4 step problems using the order of operations, including using exponents. We will then begin talking about algebraic expressions and students will learn to substitute, or to replace a letter with a number and then simplify the expression.
Example: Solve 4x + 5 when x = 3
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Distributive Property and Combining Like Terms
Students will learn to write equivalent expressions by using combining like terms and distributive property. They will be able to accurately simplify expressions to make them easier to work with.
Example: 7x - 6 + 3x + 10 = 10x + 4
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Solving Equations 1
Students will begin to solve 1 to 2 step algebraic equations. They will be able to identify whether a number is a solution to an equation or not.
Example: x + 7 = 19 or 2x - 8 = 24
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Solving Equations 2
Students will continue to practice solving 2 step equations, and will begin to solve multi-step equations using the distributive property.
Example: 3(x - 1) = 18

Learning Needs
This class can absolutely accommodate any learning needs. We will change up activities between watching, listening, and practicing, and I can make changes as necessary.
Pre-Requisites
Students should have completed 5th grade before taking this class.
Supply List
