Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
For centuries scary stories have been inspired by our greatest fears, their spooky pages have inspired generations of writers and readers, and some scary stories have been adapted into movies. In this ongoing class I will teach your child the steps to create their own scary stories. The techniques used in the class are ideal for writers of any level whether they be a beginner or at an intermediate level. Because the course will be ongoing each week learners are free to come and go at any time. To ensure this can be done smoothly the weekly class meetings will be held the same way.

Each week a preselected topic will be chosen to guide the writing process. The topic of the week will be what type of scary story will be written such as a story about a haunted house, a story about zombies, vampires, aliens, etc. Given the one-hour duration of the class each lesson will be timed with 20 minutes for learners to share samples of their stories from the previous week, 20 minutes for covering the topic of the week, and 20 minutes for independent writing.

After sharing learners will be offered feedback by their peers in the class, all feedback must be respectful. During my presentation of the topic of the week I will demonstrate a sample of my own writing simply to offer ideas. The creativity and method of which a story is drafted will be up to the individual learners. I will also share pre created worksheets with all learners enrolled in the class. During independent writing learners will have a chance to practice putting their thoughts down on paper in a draft. It will be expected that learners who remain in the class will take time on their own during the week to work on their stories.

A sample schedule is listed below.

Week 1 June 5th Aliens: Learners will create a short horror story about aliens.

Week 2 June 12th Ghosts: Learners will create a short horror story about ghosts.

Week 3 June 19th Zombies: Learners will create a short horror story about zombies.

Week 4 June 26th Murderers: Learners will create a short horror story about murderers.

Future weeks to be determined by the class.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Horror is not a genre everyone is comfortable with and all learners are entitled to creativity. Some scary stories might reference monsters, demons, aliens, or violence of people against people. I will ask that students try to keep stories appropriate for class while still aligning them with the horror genre.
Supply List
