Class Experience

This is a 3.5-day class diving deeper into the methods of multi-digit division. I think it's important that students learn different ways of solving a problem in math. This class is recommended for students in grades 4, 5, and 6 who have experience with division and multiplication.

Each day I will demonstrate each method using the same division problem. Students are encouraged to have paper and pencil and follow along. Students will explore alternative ways of thinking about division using place value, standard algorithm, and expanded notation. Some also refer to place value as open area, and expanded notation as stacking. Students will learn all of these terms as part of the lesson. At the end of the lesson, students will compare and contrast the 3 methods that we learned.

Day 1: Learn the method of place value. We will work on a problem together.
Homework: A problem will be assigned for you to complete outside of school.

Day 2: Review the homework from the previous class. Please feel free to come with questions or comments. I think it's important that we work through the problems so you feel comfortable. Learn the method of standard algorithm. We will work on a problem together.
Homework: A problem will be assigned for you to complete outside of school.

Day 3: Review the homework from the previous class. Please feel free to come with questions or comments. I think it's important that we work through the problems so you feel comfortable. Learn the method of expanded notation. We will work on a problem together.
Homework: A problem will be assigned for you to complete outside of school.

Day 4: This is a shortened class. We will review homework from the previous class and address any other concerns you or your parent may have regarding these methods. Please feel free to come with questions or comments. I think it's important that we work through the problems so you feel comfortable.
