This class is an introduction to journal writing for young girls ages 6-8.

Some benefits of journaling:
*Encouraging imagination
*Developing creativity
*Encouraging consistent, daily writing
*Developing opinions
*Writing short narratives
*Improved writing skills
*Improved grammar and spelling skills
*Improved reading skills

We will use the book "Mermaid Princess Journal" for this class, which contains daily prompts and an assortment of different types of journal pages. Girls will focus on creativity as they put their ideas down on paper. An example of a journal prompt says, "How would you celebrate your birthday as a mermaid princess?"

In this learner-led class, we will work on 1-3 pages which will include writing in class along with drawing and coloring on some of the pages. Writing skills tips will be presented such as using capitals and correct punctuation along with different sentence structures that are appropriate for the journal pages.

Girls will have the opportunity to share some of their journal pages at the beginning of each class if they would like to do so. They may choose to share something they’ve written, drawn, or colored.

Homework will consist of working on the journal pages independently outside of class. I will assign the pages after class to make sure the girls don't work independently on a page that we will cover in class.

Bachelor's Degree from Texas A&M University
Howdy from East Tennessee! I’m Shelley Greaney, and I love teaching on Outschool. I earned my bachelor’s degree at Texas A&M University, majoring in journalism with a minor in English. I'm a mother of six, grandmother of five, and I home schooled all of my children for a total of 26 years. I began teaching online five years ago as an ESL teacher and then started nutrition and grammar classes on Outschool. I also taught as a volunteer for elementary-aged children for ten years.

As a true grammar nerd, I offer foundational grammar classes for grades one, two, and three. The Great Grammar Adventure, a 29-week ongoing class, covers over a semester’s worth of grammar topics with two writing units, as well. I'm always looking for ways to make grammar more interesting for students.

I also teach First Grade Curriculum for K-1st graders. This class meets three times per week and covers a variety of topics including phonics, math, language arts, telling time on an analog clock, reading a calendar, social skills, and so much more. Students enjoy a new theme every week, worksheets to reinforce what we learn in class, and Show & Tell at the end of every class.

I believe learning should always be engaging, fun, and practical, and I work very hard to make sure each student, regardless of level, feels successful in class. I incorporate fun-themed slides, open-ended questions, scaffolding, and discussion to keep kids interested and engaged in class. I believe in letting kids share and participate in class, while maintaining an organized learning atmosphere. Lots of smiles and laughter are welcome in my classroom every day. I hope to see your child in my zoom room sometime soon.
