Mermaid Math Camp {1st Grade}

In this math camp, students will practice adding and subtracting. We will also work on other beginner math concepts (patterns, counting by multiples of 2, 5, 10 and more) using an under water theme.

Beginner Level
In this one-week class/camp, students will work on beginner math concepts including:
 
Identifying missing numbers
Completing patterns
Adding numbers 1-10
Reading equations

The mermaid theme using PowerPoint slides and underwater sea graphic makes practicing math skills feel like fun. Can't wait to see you in class!

Students will begin by greeting each other, then the content of the course will be presented using underwater-themed PowerPoint slides. The discussion will center around what the children see on the slides (sea creatures/numbers) and questions that I will ask as we go along.

Students may dress as mermaids.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to identify and count numbers 1-20.
Students will be able to identify missing numbers.
Students will be introduced to simple patterns. 
Students will be asked to complete simple subtraction and addition equations.
Students will learn facts about underwater creatures. 

Approximately 5 minutes at the beginning or end of class will be reserved for show and tell. This is a time to share favorite mermaid or ocean themed toys/clothing to encourage discussion with peers.

Having an abacus/counting frames, dice, or cheerio-like snacks are welcome to help students complete math problems.

I have experience teaching in the USA through AmeriCorps and teaching English abroad in Europe {Prague}. Also, I spent several years working professionally as a chemist (toxicology, food science, molecular biology, analytical chemistry labs) before leaving my job to become a home educator and digital creator.
