Meaningful Math: Third and Fourth Grades
Class experience
US Grade 4
In this course, students will be introduced to and practice curriculum from the third and fourth grades, including multiplication and division, simple fractions and measurements. The curriculum will be introduced and practiced through games and written practice within the Waldorf approach to education, meaning we will create our own textbook and learn how to really think things through and understand math concepts by relating them to everyday life. Students should already have at least...
Students will strengthen their multiplication table knowledge through mental math exercises and will practice written long multiplication and division problems. Story problems and understanding how to interpret and write a math sentence or equation from them will be a part of the course. Fractions will also be introduced and worked with, along with simple geometrical forms and measurements. This is a third and fourth grade-focused course coming from the Waldorf curriculum.
Aurore Sibley has taught math and math support to small groups and individuals in both Waldorf schools and privately and has a Master's in Waldorf Education as well as a certificate in remedial education.
Homework Offered
*Students will be assigned practice problems and be expected to complete assignments that were begun in class together. There will be an expectation of about thirty minutes of homework and practice each week in between our meetings. Graphite and colored pencils as well as a math notebook with blank or lightly graphed pages are required. This is known as a "math main lesson book" in Waldorf schools.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Throughout the course learner progress is assessed through students' participation and the completion of assignments. Assignments will be engaging and creative and not just rote practice. There will be quizzes, but the main assessment is informal and students will receive a brief written report with feedback at the end of the course.Grades Offered
Learners are required to have both graphite and colored pencils as well as plentiful blank or graphed paper, including a notebook that is dedicated to our math practice. A straight edge or ruler is also useful.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
