Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner Level
This is a teacher-led class with a strong emphasis on classroom participation from students. Mealtime Manners classes will present a low-pressure environment in which students will be taught using a pattern of humor/instruction/conversation/demonstration. Students will be encouraged to try their newly learned skills at home, but no homework will be required.

Students will be shown "what not to do" and "what to do" photos as elements to prompt constructive conversation. A few instructional slides will be used to show table settings and solutions to modern table dilemmas like electronics and texting.

In this class we will learn how to create a pleasant meal environment by discussing three key areas:

Week 1: How to set the table for a typical North American meal.
(Cross-cultural discussions are welcome, but this class focuses on American cuisine dining.)
Week 2: Learning good table manners (including modern topics like electronics use).
Week 3: Practicing good table conversation.

Each week will have time for review of what has been learned.
Learning Goals
Students will understand how to be hospitable participants in mealtimes by displaying good manners and creating an orderly table. Students will be able to identify unsuitable behaviors and gently advise the teacher on how to replace those behaviors with positive habits.

At the end of the three-part class, students will have learned how to do the following:

1) Set the family table independently (when items are left in an accessible location).
2) Express good table habits.
3) Actively listen to table conversation and interact politely with tablemates.

Hi friends! Welcome to Outschool!

I am a parent, a seasoned social worker, a homeschooling mom, a business owner (more than one!), and a lifelong learner. I hold two university degrees, one in Social Work and one in Religious studies. I have also taken several counseling courses at the graduate level.

However, what I have discovered is that the richness of life cannot be bound by four brick walls. Each time I engage in something I love, or have great friends working along side me, I learn so much more. Some of the things that tick my tock are . . . road tripping in our minivan (sunroof open, pizza pretzel Combos and an iced coffee in hand), photography, reading non-fiction, canoeing, hiking, painting watercolors, growing veggies, tinkering with entrepreneurial finances and pushing my brain boundaries by managing my family's film/tv rental gear business. Oh--and we spend a lot of time Lego-ing in our home.

So why do I teach online? It allows kids to remain in their comfort zone at home, but take on big learning opportunities. One of my biggest joys is celebrating with kids who have overcome intense challenges with persistent encouragement. My philosophy of teaching is that we can do WAY MORE than we think we are capable of doing, but we flourish best when we have great cheerleaders on our journey.

I have nearly five years of experience as an online teacher, but I also come with a rich resumé of managing psychosocial conferences, leading small groups, tutoring individual students, facilitating support groups, teaching ESL to PK4 through adults (over 400 students total with 5/5 reviews) and teaching in brick & mortar schools (elementary and college level). I love variety. I love knowing that each child is born with a unique personality and gifts. I find it a personal adventure and goal to help kids build confidence by letting them discover their gifts and reframe their challenges in a safe and encouraging environment.

I believe children rise to the occasion when they are motivated by bite-sized, methodical successes. And YOUR child is next. Let me help your family by offering a safe space where we can learn together.

See you in the classroom! :-)
