Welcome to my reading comprehension class! Today, we have a fascinating topic to explore together – the incredible life and achievements of Maya Angelou. Maya Angelou was not only a renowned writer but also a poet, singer, civil rights activist, and much more. We will read a short passage about Maya Angelou and complete several activities to check comprehension.  The activities include a vocabulary fill-in-the-blank, some multiple choice questions, and putting events in order.

Learning Needs
While this lesson focuses on reading comprehension, I will also include an audio version of the passage for English language learners or those students who need extra support with their reading.
Pre-Requisites
No prior knowledge is necessary. Students should be reading at about a 3rd grade level.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and Spanish from Southern Illinois University in 1996.  I received my Master's in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Reading from University of Phoenix in 2010.  I have my TESOL certification and bilingual endorsement from the State of Texas.

I have taught Bilingual Elementary School for 11 years in grades 1 and 2.  I also taught Bilingual Intermediate grades 5 and 6 as well as a year of all levels of High School Spanish.  I have taught adult classes of ESL, GED classes in English and Spanish, and some basic business classes.  I also currently teaching children at various ages English as a second language online.  

I love to share what I know with others.  I especially hope to share my love of languages, reading, and writing with children.  I love the reach that is available by teaching online.  In my free time, I enjoy reading, riding horses, watching horse events, shopping at thrift stores for treasures, and traveling.
