Scientists can tell atoms are there even if they can't see them. But since they can't see them, they don't know EXACTLY what they look like. When you don't know something EXACTLY, but you have tested an idea out and you think it's right, this is called a theory. There are many different ideas that scientists have tested, and they have a pretty good idea of what atoms look like. We are going to use a common model that many people use to understand atoms called the Bohr model (named after a very famous scientist, Niels Bohr, who made this model about 100 years ago). My goal is to get students excited about learning and bring them into the world of atoms and molecules. Class 1: We will explore the concept of matter and the space that it occupies. We will also look at what makes up an atom and create a candy atom model. Class 2: We will review atoms and learn about how atoms can be combined to make molecules. We will also explore molecules by viewing how water molecules move and create a marshmallow molecule model. If time allows, we will make an atom foldable for students to keep as a review for the class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Florida Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
“If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”
– Ignacio Estrada
I am a certified teacher and a math and science instructional coach. My teaching career began in 2007 as a 5th-grade teacher in Illinois. Now, I have the privilege of teaching comprehensive middle school science in Florida, coaching other teachers in math and science instruction, and reaching learners worldwide through Outschool! Teaching is my passion, and I am dedicated to helping students succeed and grow as learners.
I hold a BA in Elementary Education and an M.S.Ed with an emphasis in Reading. Additionally, I have endorsements in science, social science, and gifted education, which enable me to challenge students at all levels. My teaching experience spans struggling readers, summer school, tutoring, and instructional interventions in reading, math, and science. My gifted endorsement has also allowed me to offer enriched learning opportunities for gifted and advanced students through programs such as Florida Future Problem Solvers, Robotics, Nascar Education, and the Illinois Math and Science Academy.
I am fortunate to teach in a district that provides one-to-one technology, and I am an Apple and Google Certified Educator!
I believe that everyone has a scientist inside them, and I am excited to help your learner discover their love of science. I can't wait to get started!
