In this course, learners will read the assigned portion on their own or with the help of someone else and come prepared to talk about what they thought (or type it, draw a picture of something, etc. Whatever gets your learner thinking!). Each week, I will do a small lesson on a different literary device and some examples of that device in the week's text, then we will talk about what learners thought. We will be discussing characterization, tone, syntax, imagery, personification, simile, metaphor, and onomatopoeia. Chapters are short in the book, so I have put the following assignments into place for our weekly reading. The reading schedule is as follows: Week 1: Chapters 1-4 Week 2: Chapters 5-8 Week 3: Chapters 9-12 Week 4: Chapters 13-16 Week 5: Chapters 17-21 There will be optional assignments for each chapter in the form of discussion and comprehension questions, but they will not be formally graded.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about literary devices and ways to engage in reading that gets them thinking at a higher level in an age-appropriate way.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello everyone! My name is Abbie! I finished my master's degree in library science from Drexel University in September 2023; I also hold a BA in English and journalism from the University of Delaware; some of my favorite coursework outside of my major were classes in other forms of writing, literature, art history, performing arts, and social sciences. When I am not in class, you can find me reading anything I can get my hands on and watching LOTS of Netflix. I look forward to talking to you all more!
