In this course, learners will read the assigned portion on their own or with the help of someone else and come prepared to talk about what they thought (or type it, draw a picture of something, etc. Whatever gets your learner thinking!). Each week, I will do a small lesson on a different literary device and some examples of that device in the week's text, then we will talk about what learners thought. We will be discussing characterization, tone, syntax, imagery, personification, simile,...
Students will learn about literary devices and ways to engage in reading that gets them thinking at a higher level in an age-appropriate way.
There will be optional assignments given to the class each week after class to be completed for next time if the learner or their grown-ups would like it to aid in reading the book.
A copy of the book.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
This book deals with how one little girl overcomes a series of bad situations, but the book is also not shy about showing that she is being neglected. As well, school administrator abuses her power at the school she runs and is the main villain of the book. She psychologically and physically hurts some of the children.
A copy of Matilda by Roald Dahl will be required, whether it be in physical form or audiobook.
