Number talks and math talks are all about learners and their ways of thinking. Learners become more confident in their math abilities when they realize they have ideas worth listening to. In this ongoing conversational math class, learners are encouraged to share their thinking, reasoning and problem solving strategies. Plenty of wait time is provided to allow all learners to have a chance to think through the questions/problems. We will focus on mental math strategies, with the option of making quick notes on paper/digitally. We will look at various strategies and offer encouragement and support. Kindness and turn taking will be modelled and required. Class structure: 1) Introduction and explanation of the class 2) Warm up question to get learners thinking 3) Math Talk: conversational problem solving ***Questions and topics will vary each week and will be accessible for all learners. We will explore multiplication and division, addition and subtraction, fractions, geometry, decimals, pre-algebra and more.*** 4) Questions, final thoughts and goodbyes Class schedule: Please note that more than one topic may be addressed in each class, as many math concepts overlap and have commonalities. Learners should have a basic understanding of making tens (7+3=10) and place value (tens and ones). We will use this type of thinking to break apart numbers and develop our strategies. This class works best with at least 2 learners. If the minimum number of learners has not been met 30 hours before class, the class may be cancelled or postponed. Class recordings: I do not share recordings of my group classes in order to protect the privacy of all learners, as many parents do not feel comfortable with other families having access to videos that include their child. You are encouraged to contact me if you have specific questions about something covered in class. I am always happy to help. Interested in a more personalized experience? I also offer 1:1 math tutoring.
