Class Experience

Because I have students who really enjoy playing Math War with me during our tutoring sessions, I’ve decided to create a club during spring break for those who are still trying to master their multiplication facts 0’s - 12’s. It will give the students an opportunity to learn and practice while competing and having fun with their peers. The class will be very interactive. Those who just want to brush up on their facts are welcome to join us as well. Students should have already started learning their multiplication facts since this is a quick, condensed class. Initial, ongoing, and final math drill sheets will be provided to complete at home for tracking progress. They will be optional to complete, but I strongly encourage learners to do them and time themselves. Learners can message me in between classes so that I can monitor their progress, provide feedback, and offer encouragement.

The Math War game will be tweaked a bit since it’s online, and each learner will need a regular deck of playing cards with face cards and jokers included. A review of the multiplication tables on which we will focus each day will be provided in the beginning of each class along with tricks and tips to remember them. Colorful slides will be used to practice the facts out loud together before the game. Then, let the games begin! Since students often forget their math facts during the summer, this class/ club will be offered again in the summer in an expanded format.

Here is a breakdown of what to expect in this class:
-Discuss rules for the class and rules of the game
-Review multiplication tables for that day’s focus
-Learn tips and tricks to remember them
-Practice the facts quickly out loud by viewing them one by one on a colorful slide presentation
-Play Math War using today's multiplication tables! Teacher Denise keeps score
1 point for having the highest card in a round; 5 points for winning a math war. The winner is the
student with the most points in the end. In the event of a tie, an additional war will be played to determine the winner.
-Math fact drill sheets will be provided for practice after each class to complete at home for those who are interested

Review the easier tables 0’s, 1’s, 10’s, 11’s; learn / practice 2’s and 4’s, and 5’s and play Math War
Review 2’s, 4’s, and 5’s quickly; learn / practice 3’s, 6’s, and 9’s and play Math War
Review 3’s, 6’s, 9’s quickly; learn/ practice 7’s, 8’s, and 12’s and play Math War
Learning Goals
Students will learn tricks and tips for memorizing their multiplication facts and get the opportunity to apply them in our Math War game. Increasing the students' accuracy and speed is the short-term goal with the ultimate goal being mastery. Another goal is for the class learners to have fun and enjoy the interaction with their peers!

Teacher expertise and credentials
After receiving a BS Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland in 1987and teaching math in public and private school class settings, along with tutoring the subject for over a decade, I am highly qualified and experienced to teach this class. My tutoring experience, in particular, has given me the opportunity to try many different methods one on one with my students to find those that are the most effective to help my learners achieve math fact mastery. Math War has proven to be one of the most popular and fun learning games for my students.
