Learners will gain strategies for solving fun (and sometimes crazy!) word problems. The intent of this class is to give learners a variety of tools and the practice they need to approach word problems and understand when and how to apply addition and subtraction within 100. Printable activities will be available after the first class meeting and can be downloaded and printed prior to the following class. This class is appropriate for advanced young learners (ages 6-7) and learners (2nd grade) who are ready to tackle word problems with addition and subtraction to 100. The class atmosphere will be fun and engaging for learners. Each class meeting will include direct instruction (with specific problem solving strategies), lots of examples for practice, and learner participation and engagement as we work together to solve word problems. Week 1: step-by-step strategy for solving word problems Week 2: addition and subtraction strategies to 100 and more fun word problems Week 3: create your own word problems
This class meets the NCTM common core standard for Mathematics Grade 2: Students represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. Specifically, students will be able to:
• Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions
• Use drawings and equations with a symbol to solve problems with an unknown number
• Write their own word problems to better understand mathematical operations as they relate to real world scenarios
Printable handouts will be available after the first class meeting.
I’m so excited to offer this class as both a teacher who is a math nut and as a mom with kids who love math! I am a certified teacher, and in addition to teaching education courses for the local university, I currently teach math to small groups in my 2nd grader’s classroom and accelerated math to a small group in my 4th grader’s classroom. Through my small group teaching experiences and background as a professional educator, I have learned so many great strategies for making early math fun and interactive. I’m looking forward to sharing my enthusiasm and experience with you!
